JOB DESCRIPTION

CLASS TITLE: COUNSELOR

DEFINITION: Provides an integrated program of personal, educational and vocational guidance for pupils.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions (Primary Responsibilities):

  • Counsels with students regarding educational, vocational and personal problems as related to school activities and achievement.

  • Assists students and parents with educational and vocational planning including timely completion of college applications, financial aid applications and S.A.T. preparation.

  • Programs students and makes necessary schedule adjustments.

  • Aids in the identification and counseling of students with potential school problems including potential drop-outs, behavioral deviations, and other school related problems, and makes appropriate referrals.

  • Monitors progress towards graduation and post graduation goals.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Initiates and participates in parent-teacher conferences as appropriate.

  • Maintains appropriate records of conferences and records pertinent data in the cumulative folders.

  • Conducts case conferences with teachers and parents as S.S.T. coordinator after a thorough study of an individual student.

Ancillary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Aids in the selection and administration of group ability and achievement tests.

  • Interprets test results for parents, students and teachers.

  • Confers with personnel from community agencies concerning student problems as related to school adjustment and achievement.

  • Assists in evaluation and revision of the educational programs.

  • Aids in the formulation of the master teaching schedule.

  • Assists with student, parent and teacher orientation programs to facilitate articulation.

  • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.

  • Assists in the supervision of the students in all phases of extra-curricular activities and at breaktime and lunch.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Communication skills.

  • Behavioral patterns of secondary pupils.

  • Tests and measurements.

  • Problem identification.

  • School curriculum.

  • School and staff policies and regulations.

  • College entrance requirements.

  • Financial aid application procedures.

  • S.A.T. preparation programs; student assessment programs.

Ability to:

  • Counsel students individually and in groups; work well with faculty and staff; identify community needs and resources.

  • Tactfully and positively reinforce appropriate school behavior, and possess a considerable degree of patience, good humor and flexibility

  • Relate well with students, parents, administrators, teachers and other school personnel.

  • Communicate in writing for the purposes of composing the required reports and other correspondence.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good grooming and a positive personality which establishes a desirable example for pupils.

  • Strong favorable recommendations from previous supervisors and other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher.

  • Must possess good judgment, knowledge of school and district policies (including the district curriculum).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters degree or equivalent.

  • Pupil Personnel Services Credential

  • One year Counseling experience

  • Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate, neat, timely fashion; to make good judgments and decisions; and to evaluate the results of decisions and judgments.
