The primary purpose of the position is to deliver primary health care to students. Applies current nursing theory, principles of care and nursing procedures in performing the following functions appropriate to the age of the patient, maintains a safe and clean care environment, quality improvement, actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, behaves in a manner consistent with the mission and objectives FSU Student Health Services and performs other duties as requested.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for handling patient appointments and performing routine examinations to ensure patient health. Provides counseling with regards to health promotion and disease prevention. Teach, and evaluate students and other medical staff. Provides clinical knowledge to health-related queries from faculty and staff. Their duties include speaking with their patients about healthy lifestyle choices for their age, completing diagnostic tests to help diagnose and treat patients for injuries or illnesses and coordinating with other healthcare professionals to maintain updated medical records.

Description of Work Continued:

DUTIES PERFORMED

Establish and maintain effective communications with patients, their families, healthcare personnel, and others. Convey information clearly and concisely either verbally or in writing regarding the disease process and level of care and services being rendered to ensure that the intended audience understands the information and the message. Listen and respond appropriately to others.

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with patients, their families and healthcare personnel by listening, understanding, and responding to identified needs.

  • Responsibility for continued professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and participation in health policy activities at the local, state, national, and international levels.

  • Anticipate the needs of patients and their families.

  • Coordinate referrals to specialists.

  • Train patients and their families to manage and prevent illness and injury.

  • Work under pressure and for a minimum of 40 hours/week.

  • Communicate the basic principles of health promotion and disease prevention.

  • Provide advice and counsel to patients, their families and healthcare personnel.

  • Answer questions from healthcare personnel on disease processes, diagnosis, and treatment.

  • Provide guidance and feedback to help patients, their families, and healthcare personnel strengthen their understanding of and/or capacity to deal with health issues.

  • Provide instruction to healthcare personnel on disease processes, diagnosis, and treatment.

  • Consulting with physicians or other health care providers when needed to create treatment plans and diagnose patients with a difficult set of symptoms.

  • Facilitates the patient's transition within and between health care settings, e.g., admitting, referrals, and counseling patients.

  • Develop and maintain a close working relationship with facility, regional and central office management, and administration.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Training:

  • Registered Nurse must obtain a license to practice in North Carolina. This licensure requires a valid state Registered Nurse license and the completion of a national certification examination.

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina with two or more years of experience.

Experience:

  • Must have more than three years' experience in an outpatient clinical environment, primary care clinic, or Urgent Care setting.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

Registered Nurse will be expected to:

  • Establish expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of on-going work for a group of nurses and other clinical or support staff.

  • Motivate and engage employees through effective communication. Knowledge of appropriate policies and procedures for recruiting, selecting, developing, counseling, disciplining, and evaluating performance of employees to retain a diverse workforce.

  • Administer and ensure compliance with human resources policies and procedures.

  • Assess work and provide feedback.

  • Provide technical supervision of staff.

  • Develop plans for employees to gain necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform their duties.

  • Plan for and support employees in career development opportunities.

  • Assist in establishing work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work.

  • Review work and evaluate performance of others, and to develop individuals' competencies.

  • Identify and address quality monitoring and performance improvement issues for the facility.

  • Coach and facilitate the enhancement of employee competencies as appropriate to the needs of the facility.

  • Assist lower-level clinical professionals and non-professional university health services center personnel engaged in the physical, psychosocial, or mental health care and treatment of students/patients through ongoing observation, orientation of employees to patient care, guidance counseling and ongoing employee development programs designed to enhance and improve knowledge and skills in nursing practices.

  • Work includes auditing, monitoring, and evaluating the quality of nursing care and treatment provided for compliance with nursing quality assurance and infection control standards; and for adherence to the university's policies and procedures, and for adherence to standards of professional nursing practice, and initiating corrective actions as appropriate; and updating protocols.

  • Work also includes identifying staff training needs; initiating and evaluating training recommendations for the nursing personnel and appraising the effects training has on

  • Participate in and evaluate in-service and out-service training, staff development and continuing education programs to enhance professional nursing skills consistent for the type of health care setting.

  • Assist with daily task based on clinic needs.

Additional Duties

  • Completes other duties per request Medical Director, FSU Director, Student Affairs leadership, Campus leadership.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS

  • Demonstrates full knowledge of the principles and practices of primary and college health medicine including all clinical aspects.

  • Knowledge of good work practices and skill in others, including communication skills (listening, asking questions and giving feedback).

  • Demonstrates full knowledge of techniques of patient interviewing, medical history review, health evaluation tools, interpretation of laboratory test results and therapeutic procedures.

  • Demonstrates knowledge to develop patient care plans based on assessment and findings.

  • Complies with State and federal laws regarding licensing and prescribing and maintains active certification as required by State rules and national programs as required by the university.

  • Evaluate performance and may assist or conduct investigations and participate in disciplinary actions.

  • Delegate and assign duties to non-licensed and licensed nursing staff, which is within their scope of practice, giving clear, understandable instructions and how to deal effectively with difficult employees.

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
