Duties
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles.
The incumbent performs technical and clerical assistance work in support of Sarasota National Cemetery. Acts as a receptionist and a customer service representative and provides appropriate guidance regarding cemetery benefits to funeral homes, calling and visiting customers. Incumbent assists cemetery visitors as needed. Must be well informed of program operations in order to intelligently handle inquiries and make appropriate decisions and/or referrals. The incumbent maintains records and a tracking system to ensure that deadline dates are fully met and keeps abreast of matters pertaining to procedures and policies related to memorandums, reports, and related administrative documents. Maintains records on points of contact in order to obtain input on related administrative matters pertaining to office-related administrative needs.
Performs public outreach as needed.
This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 6 months. Temporary appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration for one year or less. Should the need warrant, temporary appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of one additional year (for a total of two years, or 24 months within the preceding three year or 36 months' period). The appointment to a temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Work schedule: Required to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. May include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day and Veteran's Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Physical Requirements: Employee sits comfortably to do the office work. There will be an ample amount of walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; supplies purchased; or driving an automobile, etc. As a Cemetery Representative and COTR the incumbent will be required to walk and stand outside through some extremely inclement weather as the season dictates. The position also requires assisting with the moving of caskets placed on wheeled biers into committal shelters. Periods of keyboard work is required at computer terminals and typewriters. Occasional lifting of heavy records containers is required. Incumbent is required to operate a government sedan or van and must possess a valid state driver's license.
