NOTE: This is a temporary position that will not exceed 28 hours per week.

SUMMARY:

Helps patrons of the Nueces County Library to locate and use library materials, including computers.

Operates the circulation desk, enters cataloging data in the computer, files library materials, and prepares computerized reports. Reports to the Library Director in the Robstown library.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Other duties may be assigned.

Conducts circulation desk duties, including suggesting reading materials to patrons; checking materials in and out; and taking money and issuing receipts for fines, membership cards, photocopies, etc.

Assists telephone callers and walk-ins.

Assists patrons in using computers for reading and research purposes, including use of the Internet.

Refiles material on shelves in proper order.

Types and files catalog cards, shelf lists and other materials, as needed.

Files shelf list cards to eventually be entered into the library database in correct Dewey order.

Processes materials, including books, cassettes and records, CD's, DVDs and other sound recordings using AACR2 cataloging rules.

Uses computer to enter cataloging and other data in specialized library software.

Also uses applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.

Collects statistics and prepares reports to send to the Library Director each month for the Nueces County Library Board meeting.

Maintains periodicals, including stamping new magazines and pulling old issues.

Prepares monthly overdue notices and collects fines and fees for various services.

Maintains reserve list, notifies patrons when reserved books have arrived, and returns items if not picked up within prescribed period.

May clean records and books and replace worn covers with adhesive vinyl or plastic.

Performs various clerical tasks, such as typing and making photocopies as needed.

Types new library cards, letters, overdue book lists, and memos.

May train and supervise volunteers in the library.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma (or GED certificate).

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.

Employee also responsible for keeping records such as overdue notices and files.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License or alternate means of transportation.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access programs.

Needs some basic technological troubleshooting skills.

Should have knowledge of library clerical duties, organization and operation.

Ability to work well with adults and children. Ability to speak and write effectively.

Ability to type accurately at a minimum speed of 45 words per minute.

Should have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organizations, schools, employees and the general public.

Ability to assist library patrons in a friendly and professional manner.

Ability to file and shelve materials using the Dewey Decimal System.

Must be able to function without direct supervision of the Library Director.

Bilingual ability to speak, read, and write Spanish preferred.

Money handling experience preferred.
