Position Description

Temporary Curator for exhibitions, producer, and public program manager for the Hedreen Gallery in the Lee Center for the Arts. The Curator will plan and produce one exhibition per quarter, as well as related events. The Curator will also assist in the production and scheduling of exhibits and events in the Vachon Gallery. The Curator will report to the Chair of the Department of Visual Arts and consult with the department faculty and staff, attending Department meetings when appropriate.

Job Functions:

  • Design and produce a holistic program of contemporary art exhibitions, artist residencies, and public events that reflect Seattle University's mission and commitment to diverse perspectives.

  • Responsible for the visioning, selection, planning, implementation, and promotion of one exhibition each quarter (3) at the Hedreen Gallery, 1-2 public programs related to each Hedreen exhibition, and providing production and installation support for Vachon Gallery exhibits.

  • Manage internal scheduling, strategy, planning, promotion, hosting, and installation of gallery exhibitions, programs and receptions in response to Seattle University academic timelines and in collaboration with the Director of Arts Programming.

  • Meet quarterly with Department of Visual Arts faculty regarding programming, collaboration and curriculum.

  • Meet monthly with the Director of Arts Programming regarding budgeting, scheduling, and event support.

  • Work with the Lee Center Theatre Technical Director and/or Production Manager to coordinate gallery and theatre schedules and communicate exhibition installation plans.

  • Schedule and share quarterly exhibition production plans and timelines with Director of Arts Programming to organize and schedule student employment hours during installation weeks (outside Lee Center open hours).

  • Manage Hedreen Gallery budget with oversight from the Department of Visual Arts Chair and the Director of Arts Programming.

  • Secure contracts and art loan agreements and gather and organize W9's and SU forms for artist honoraria and send to Director of Arts Programming for processing.

  • Arrange and oversee all shipping, installation, de-installation, and maintenance activities in the Hedreen and Vachon Galleries.

  • Write and/or collaborate with artists/or guest writers/curators to adapt exhibition descriptions, images and image credits for marketing for use in galleries, social media and the web.

  • Create press releases for exhibition programming and respond to requests for interviews.

  • Schedule production timeline of promotional materials in collaboration with Director of Arts Programming and SU Marketing.

  • Delegate design and production work to student gallery assistants and/or Graduate Student Marketing Assistant whenever possible.

  • Schedule and delegate marketing and social media plans to the Graduate Student Marketing Assistant for the Department of Visual Arts.

  • Oversee design and production of didactic materials for campus galleries. Schedule production timeline of didactic materials (trifold brochures and/or wall text) and delegate design and production work to student gallery assistants when possible.

  • Produce annual overview of current year exhibition plans & programs (ideally June 1 but at latest, September 1). Produce annual recap of past year exhibition programs (June 30) with blurbs and images to serve needs of various funding reports and SU programs.

Marginal Job Functions:

  • Join Installer and Graduating Student Marketing Assistant to meet with students and faculty advisors in courses in 3 Seattle University Visual Arts graduation exhibitions during scheduled course hours. Oversee Installer to produce and coordinate these exhibitions.

  • Work to raise the profile of galleries and the SU Department of Visual Arts on campus and in the Seattle community. Collaborate with faculty and staff across disciplines to increase on campus student involvement with galleries.

  • Gather and organize materials for online archive of activities at campus galleries and public programs and send to Director of Arts Programming for processing.

  • Meet quarterly with Curator of Campus Art Collection. University Advancement, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and with committee organizing SU Student Assistantship program.

  • Perform other duties as requested by the Chair of Visual Arts and as required for successful operation of the campus galleries.

Qualifications

  • BFA in any visual art field plus relevant curatorial experience.

  • Familiarity with art installation in gallery spaces.

  • Experience budgeting for and managing a visual art gallery.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.A. in Art History or MFA in any visual art field.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $28.73 per hour

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.

Hybrid Eligible*

This position may be eligible for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of an introductory work period of 3-6 months. This may mean that a hybrid eligible role will begin on-campus initially and then will transition to hybrid format following onboarding and training. Flexible work plans are subject to periodic review and may be changed or terminated at any time for any reason at the university's discretion.
