Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Fire Safety, the Fire Safety Coordinator (FSC) ensures campus compliance where fire hazards may be present. The FSC assists with developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, educational and promotional materials, and developing and presenting safety and prevention programs and events to students, faculty, staff, and other campus constituents. This role also provides advice and guidance on fire and life safety issues, and works with University safety committees and business units to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and guidelines

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure University compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Comprehends, interprets, and applies established University, industry, and government regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Assist with conducting inspections of University grounds and buildings to identify fire and safety hazards, including but not limited to electrical devices, outlets, obstructed emergency exits, lighting, and other potentially hazardous conditions. Completes inspection activity reports.

  • Identify, provide recommendations and take measures to correct fire and safety hazards. Identify and implement changes to the safety and accident prevention program.

  • Conduct fire drills. Observe and evaluate evacuation results.

  • Assist with conducting comprehensive vulnerability assessments of University facilities.

  • Inspect, organizes and maintains inventory of safety and related equipment, including fire extinguishers, for accessibility and code compliance.

  • Recommend, implement, and deliver training sessions, workshops, instruction and/or seminars for students, faculty and staff related to fire safety, fire prevention, and the usage of safety equipment.

  • Attend additional training and certification courses, seminars, and safety conferences to obtain licensing in Fire Prevention RCS and to increase knowledge in required disciplines.

  • Assist with plan development, fire safety compliance, construction site visits, and safety equipment upkeep, inventory, and research. Assist with the review, evaluation and processing of service contracts, procurement activities, review of income, budget recommendations and data processing.

  • Work with internal and external partners to revise, update, and rewrite fire safety and emergency management response plans. Arrange and participate in meetings with partners and advisory board members to coordinate safety activities as needed.

  • Maintain essential records and files.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Certified as Fire Fighter 1 from an academy accredited in New Jersey.

  • Minimum one year of professional experience conducting fire prevention inspections, drills, and training, and developing and/or presenting fire prevention programs.

  • A valid Driver's License (to drive university vehicles).

  • Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to travel between campus locations.

  • Ability to occasionally climb ladders and stairs, and occasionally enter substations or small areas.

  • Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds.

  • Ability to work with small tools and equipment

  • Ability to work outside standard business hours to respond to campus emergencies when necessary.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience conducting training for campus life organizations, Residence Life, Greek Life, Campus Recreation, etc.

  • Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.
