Telemetry Technician - Surgical Telemetry @ Swedish Cherry Hill

Full Time (36 Hour Week)

Night Shift

12 Hour Shifts

Responsible for performing general secretarial and clerical duties in the patient care areas. Interacts with patients, families and physicians and acts as a liaison among members of the health care team, patients and families.

Assists the nursing staff in coordinating the activity of the unit. Oversees the orderliness of work areas and orders forms and other clerical supplies.

General Customer Service:

Greets visitors, providing information and assistance as needed. Works with patients, families, visitors and physicians to identify needs, resolve problems or provide other information.

Facilitates patient movement to other departments. Answers call lights, alarms and phone calls, providing patient assistance as appropriate. Issues visitor passes/identification per unit protocols. Arranges for interpreter services.

New Admissions, Transfer & Discharge Activities:

Prepares a paper chart and prints stickers from electronic medical record for each new patient. Provides welcome brochures.

Sends discharge medication orders to pharmacy as applicable by campus. Checks unoccupied rooms to make sure they are ready for new admit. Collaborates with nurse and other team members to organize and prioritize functions necessary for patient admission and care delivery.

Maintains data entry of patient names and assigned nurse into Monitoring System. Maintains log and census books with admissions and discharges in proper order.

Electronic Medical Record "EMR":

Performs all ADT (admission, discharge and transfer) functions. Prepares charts for transfer and discharge.

Ensures accommodation codes are correct. In conjunction with the Charge Nurse, manages bed board. Reviews orders for upcoming tests, procedures and communicates priority to nursing staff.

Makes minor changes as needed i.e. unit collect vs. lab collect to orders. Checks pended and signed/held orders. Ensures downtime computer is on and checklists are complete.

Runs reports and audits as requested by unit manager or designee. Enters non-medication verbal orders during a "Code Blue" or other emergencies. May act as a resource for the EMR for staff and physicians.

Environment of Care & Regulatory Readiness:

Instructs families and visitors in hand hygiene protocols. Participates in the education of patient/families to unit practices/routines and orients patients to unit per protocols.

Rounds the unit in accordance with department regulatory standards i.e. keeps hallways clear, equipment plugged in. Keeps work area clean and clutter free. Posts signs, i.e. hand hygiene, NPO, free water restriction etc., as appropriate.

Reinforces with patients isolation protocols and communicates concerns to the nursing staff. Actively participates in unit, department, and system-wide educational activities including Quality Improvement programs as appropriate.

Other Duties:

Distributes mail. Sends patient reports to HIM upon discharge.

Inventories education brochures and office supplies, and orders as appropriate. Communicates with other hospital departments regarding concerns with faulty equipment, work orders or other issues. Responsible for restocking supplies after use, maintains appropriate core stocking levels, including MSC and Nutrition, works with manager or designee to improve unit and individual routines to assure adequate room supply without excess or depletion.

Notifies nurse manager and/or designee and makes recommendation for par level adjustments. Performs other duties as assigned, to insure effectiveness of care delivery and unit function. Distributes laundry as needed.

Back up and Downtime Monitor Tech Duties:

  • Views cardiac rhythm monitors continuously and interprets cardiac rhythms. Monitors patients in leads V1 and III unless there is a clinical reason to use different leads.

  • Documents each patient's baseline rhythm strip and any significant changes in rhythm in rhythm strip log book as outlined in Monitor Technician Guidelines. Records each patient's heart rate, rhythm, and ectopy each hour on monitor log. Collaborates and communicates with Monitor Technicians in the Tele ICU regarding patient status, staffing assignment changes (room & Contact numbers) and alarm escalation.

  • Communicates changes in heart rate, rhythm, and other significant patient information immediately to RN or other appropriate person.

  • Notifies Nursing Assistant-Certified (NA-C) or Registered Nurse (RN) immediately when batteries are low in telemetry units or when telemetry signal is lost due to artifact or patient readings out-of-range.

  • Follows established procedures for admitting and discharging patients from telemetry system as outlined in Monitor Technician Guidelines and keeps monitor log and rhythm strip lob current.

  • Provides update report to oncoming monitor technician each shift, including patient name, baseline rhythm, rhythm changes and ectopy that have occurred on the shift, if patient is off unit or expected to go off unit for tests.

  • Assist in other unit activities as directed by the Manager, Unit Supervisor or Charge Nurse

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Arrhythmia Interpretation class with score of at least 80% on final exam

  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association

  • Individuals hired with previous monitor technician experience must pass a challenge exam with a score of 80%

  • 1 year experience in related healthcare setting in a clinical, clerical or service capacity i.e. monitor technician, hospital unit coordinator, nurse aid certified, medical assistant, license practical nurse, medical records clerk, food service or environmental services worker

  • Completion of a Health Unit Coordinator program with a 3 month internship program at Swedish may be substituted for the previously defined year of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience using electronic medical record
