Department Summary

The Telecommunications Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of voice, data, and network systems across the university campus. This role involves running, terminating, and splicing cables; installing telecommunications equipment; troubleshooting technical issues; and maintaining accurate inventory records. The technician will also assist with aerial and underground cable installation and splicing as needed.

Role Summary

  • Establish and maintain voice and data networks by running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cables.
  • Install and configure telecommunications equipment, including routers, switches, wireless access points, multiplexors, and cable trays, following industry standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting for university telephones, cable TV, networking, and wireless access points, referring complex technical issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace telephone components as needed.
  • Investigate and resolve telephone-related issues for faculty and staff.
  • Assist in aerial and underground cable installation and splicing between poles and buildings. Distinguish wire colors accurately for installation and repair purposes.
  • Maintain inventory records of all university equipment used in work orders.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Establishes voice and data networks by running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cables; installing telecommunications equipment, routers, switches, Wireless Access Points, multiplexers, and cable trays; and following industry standards.
  • Performs technical duties involved in the routine maintenance of University telephones, Cable TV, Networking and Wireless Access Points.; refers complex technical problems to other technical personnel. Maintains inventory records of all University equipment used on work orders.
  • Assist with aerial and underground cable installation and splicing between poles and/or buildings when needed.
  • Distinguishes the color of wires while on jobsites for installation or repair.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions

  1. Assists with technical and operational technology support related to installation of cabling and associated equipment.

  2. Assists with the integration of new communication technology product offerings or modifications.
