VOIP Telecommunications Installer/Technician

Location:
Remote in Peoria, Bloomington, or Springfield Illinois areas. Occasional visits to the East Peoria Construction office for paperwork.

Travel:This is a traveling position to client sites in the Central Illinois territory, with day travel and occasional overnight travel (less than 10% annually).

Shift:Monday- Friday (8 am- 5 pm)

The VOIP Telecommunications Installer/Technician is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and repair of telecommunication systems and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) systems. This role involves working with various technologies, ensuring proper network connectivity, and providing technical support to clients. The technician ensures that customers have access to reliable and high-quality communication services.

Responsibilities Include:

Installation and Setup:

  • Install and configure telecommunications equipment, including routers, modems, phone systems, cable lines, and VOIP hardware/software.

  • Set up and connect communication systems for residential and commercial customers.

  • Integrate VOIP systems with existing network infrastructure.

  • Ensure proper functioning of installed equipment through testing and troubleshooting.

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Diagnose and repair issues with telecommunications and VOIP equipment and infrastructure.

  • Perform routine maintenance to ensure systems are operating efficiently.

  • Respond to service calls and troubleshoot network or connectivity problems.

  • Perform regular maintenance checks on VOIP systems to ensure optimal performance.

Customer Service:

  • Provide excellent customer service by explaining installation procedures and equipment usage to clients.

  • Address customer complaints and provide technical support both on-site and remotely.

  • Educate customers on how to use their new telecommunications and VOIP systems effectively.

Technical Duties:

  • Run and terminate cables, including fiber optic, coaxial, and Ethernet.

  • Use specialized tools and equipment for installation and testing, such as cable testers and signal meters.

  • Program and configure telecommunications and VOIP systems according to customer requirements.

  • Ensure reliable network connectivity for VOIP services.

  • Implement security measures to protect VOIP systems from unauthorized access and cyber threats.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and maintenance activities.

  • Complete and submit required documentation and reports in a timely manner.

  • Keep inventory of supplies and equipment used in installations and repairs.

  • Document technical processes and procedures for future reference.

Qualifications:

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools.

  • Strong knowledge of telecommunications systems, VOIP technologies, and protocols (SIP, RTP, etc.).

  • Understanding of networking principles and ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.

  • Proficient in network configurations and troubleshooting.

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in telecommunications installation, maintenance, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in VOIP installation, configuration, and maintenance.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Good physical condition and ability to work in various environments, including heights and confined spaces.

  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certifications preferred.

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in telecommunications, information technology, or a related field.

  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT), or similar are advantageous.

  • Relevant certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) are advantageous.

Work Environment:

  • The role may require travel to client sites for installations and repairs.

  • Ability to work in various environments, including office settings, data centers, and outdoor locations.

  • Flexibility to work outside regular business hours if needed for emergency repairs or installations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment.

  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights, if necessary.
