Who we're looking for:

Starry is looking for a tech-savvy Construction Technician who'd like to help us redefine how people access the internet. You will act as the face of Starry Internet Services to building owners and internet subscribers, and be responsible for driving our network infrastructure projects by leveraging your networking knowledge.

Reporting to the Manager, Deployment / Construction, this role will provide continued support for the construction and deployment of Multi Dwelling Units (MDU's) in support of building Starry network and internet services. The Construction Technician Lead will be responsible for the installation and delivery of assigned MDU projects and build outs.

What You'll Do:

  • Delight customers and provide a superior customer experience

  • Install wireless equipment using any combination of external and internal antennas, coaxial cable, fiber optic, and UTP cables on indoor and outdoor vertical structures

  • Install AC / DC power equipment including electrical panel, disconnect, and meter housing

  • Install various ground mounted equipment and power/meter cabinets/pedestals

  • Terminate wall and ceiling mounted components

  • Complete Fiber and UTP Certification and testing

  • Assist in proposal development and project preparation activities

  • Complete job related documentation and record keeping

  • Complete site surveys to troubleshoot and design corrective RF and RF/fiber optic installations for existing systems with inadequate coverage

  • Assist in warehouse maintenance and inventory

  • Keep customers and company informed of progress of installation

  • Communicate and coordinate with customers and company regarding specific safety concerns, local code, and company installation requirements

  • Assist with development of project schedules and materials/subcontractor selections

  • Mentor and lead less experienced technicians

  • Keep informed on and follow safety protocols, as warranted, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as well as OSHA safety standards

Experience and Education Required:

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of outdoor and/or in-building installation experience in network engineering, deployment, fiber construction, wireless infrastructure, or telecom environment

  • 5 years of experience in Outside Plant, Telephone, or Power engineering, and construction and experience with common wireless equipment including Fiber, Repeaters, Coaxial Cable, CAT 5 Cable, Antennas, Splitters, Fiber Cable, etc.

  • A demonstrated ability to drive performance and execute against plans as well as complete installations independently in a professional manner at all job sites

  • Knowledge of safe operation of vertical lift and truck mounted boom/vertical lift as well as demonstrated ability to use basic hand and power tools needed for installation projects

  • Installation of various ground mounted equipment and power/meter cabinets/pedestals

  • Working knowledge and understanding of wireless networks, including modulation techniques (UTMS, GSM, LTE Pathing plus etc.), amplifier/antenna/cable theory,

  • BICSI Certified Preferred

  • Strong customer service and communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work well on a team

  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs regularly, respond quickly to avoid or mitigate potentially dangerous situations, move safely over uneven terrain, safely climb ladders while carrying up to 40 lbs, and work outdoors in extreme weather

  • Must adhere to OSHA safety guidelines and wear personal protective gear properly

  • Must be able to bustle about, bend, squat, or stand for prolonged periods of time

In this position, you will support the Network Deployment Team by performing site walks to determine the appropriate system design for customer properties, and articulating the same in the form of detailed design documents and specifications for Starry Construction Managers and our network of third-party contractors to follow. A typical day can sometimes be physically demanding, but our ideal candidate is willing to participate in field deployments that are often off-site and at times off-hours. This position is based in New York but you should be willing to travel locally, approximately 20%. What You'll Be Doing: * Establish and maintain a deep understanding of the overall Starry technology portfolio * Provide the initial technical product overview to new customer accounts, and assist in the production of RFPs and other proposals to customers * Identify technical requirements, then design and implement Starry's system to fit the customer's property * Lead pre-sales design activities, including site walks, to determine a customer-approved location for Starry system hardware and cabling, and to determine how existing wiring in the building may be incorporated into the design plan * Provide expert guidance on Starry system design concepts, including physical network design and key RF considerations * Strong competency in generating solution documentation for both internal stakeholders and clients: often in the form of network implementation plans, physical network designs, slides, documents, and spreadsheets * Ensure the feasibility of your proposed solution with our Deployment and Engineering teams * Track, prioritize, and manage all technical activities and milestones from pre-sale to customer-ready * You'll be the primary point of contact to resolve technical design issues from customers (internal and external) during and after installations * Provide hands-on management of the most complex projects: leading by personally taking on any difficult problems * Beyond day-to-day responsibilities, you'll also develop creative approaches to keep operational costs low and improve the efficiency of our approach to infrastructure deployment Experience and Education Required: * BS in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience * 5+ years in a technical solutions role * Experience with high-tech products and solutions-based sales methods * Established organizational and time management skills and regimen * Experience in the development and implementation of one or more of the following: data and IP services (VoIP, MPLS, VPN, Internet, data center deployments) or managed network services (LAN, WAN, WLAN) * Experience with networking and routing - CCNP or equivalent experience a plus * Our ideal candidate will have a strong bias for action, and sense of pace and urgency; you'll ensure work is completed within expected timelines * A proven track record delivering on or exceeding goals is desired * You'll be highly motivated, extremely organized, team-oriented, creative, and possess outstanding communication skills * Real passion for Starry's business * Ability to meet physical requirements of the position such as bustling about, standing, bending, or sitting for the duration of your shift * Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds We work hard, so we take care of each other and try to enjoy ourselves along the way.
