General Information:

The School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD) at James Madison University invites applications for a full-time Technology Manager starting in August 2024. SMAD is based in the College of Arts and Letters and has more than 20 faculty and about 700 students in the competitive program that includes concentrations in creative advertising, digital video & cinema, interactive design and journalism. We seek a customer-service oriented colleague experienced in media production who can manage the school's technology needs and oversee SMAD's state-of-the-art studio that students and faculty use for narrative, informational and news-related productions. The Technology Manager will lead and supervise SMAD's lab manager and chief engineer and is responsible for researching and recommending technology purchases, as well as advising faculty and students on using media technology. Those duties will also include maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, software and systems in the studio and across SMAD. The position also allows for the successful candidate to engage in creative media production for SMAD and other departments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance for the technology team. Models customer service approach with all constituencies.

  • Hire, train, assign tasks, and manage performance of direct reports.

  • Work with faculty and students to ensure studio set-up and technology needs are met.

  • Manage SMAD's fixed assets by tracking inventory and helping troubleshoot equipment.

  • Facilitate studio operations.

  • Provide troubleshooting of lab and studio equipment, software and systems.

  • Stay current on operating systems, major software and media equipment.

  • Research and recommend technology purchases.

  • Produce videos for SMAD and other departments, as needed.

  • Ensure all JMU and state policies related to technology and equipment are followed.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in leadership and working as part of a team.

Understanding of office management best practices and using Excel spreadsheets.

  • Fluent in Macintosh operating environment and knowledge of non-linear video editing software and procedures.

  • Knowledge of modern TV studios and video facilities, including audio, graphics, intercom, fiber, and software and networking platforms.

  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies, procedures and software.

  • Able to work autonomously and be self-directed.

  • Ability to write, produce, shoot, and edit video projects.
