POSITION: NDSCS Police Lieutenant (Pos # 00011224)

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: This is a full time, twelve month, benefited position

BACKGROUND CHECK: NDSCS requires a successful background check for the selected candidate prior to an official offer of the position.

JOB SUMMARY: Duties include providing a safe and secure environment for the students, staff and visitors; enforcing all ND criminal and traffic laws, NDUS and NDSCS policies and procedures and protecting property of NDSCS and includes supervisory and administrative duties.


  • Must support the mission, vision and values of NDSCS

  • Associate's degree in related field

  • Minimum of three years working in law enforcement with progressive leadership/supervisory responsibilities

  • Minimum of one-year direct law enforcement supervisory experience

  • ND Peace Officer License (POST Board) or eligible to be licensed at time of hire

  • Valid Driver's License with no more than three moving violations in the past two years

  • Proficient in the use of computers and software applications

  • Strong interpersonal/oral/written communication skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to community policing

  • Effective presentation and public speaking skills

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including rotating shifts

  • Must have left previous law enforcement employment in good standing

Post Offer/Pre-hire: You must pass a physical exam including vision and hearing screenings, satisfactorily complete a psychological assessment, and must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate your abilities to meet minimum qualifications.

After Hire: Must pass a qualifying shooting course per department standards as a condition of continued employment.


  • Bachelor's degree

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Clery Act, Title IX and the Violence Against Women's Act (VAWA)

  • Successful law enforcement experience in a higher education setting

Or a Certificate in an appropriate field with a minimum of five years of non-teaching energy industry work experience or no Degree/Certificate with a minimum of ten years of non-teaching energy industry work experience. * Agreement to complete a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field within six years of date of hire (tuition assistance available), if applicant does not possess one. * Excellent working knowledge in one or more of the following power generation areas: operations, electrical/instrumentation, plant/system protection & communications. * Strong operational/maintenance knowledge of the electrical generation industry sector. * Good computer software skills – Microsoft Office, email and electronic calendar. * Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills. * Excellent written communication skills. * Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and to articulate and support the community college philosophy. * Will be required to obtain North Dakota State Board for Career and Technical Education certification (up to six years to obtain and training is provided).
