Job Description

This is a learning opportunity for students currently enrolled in a diesel technician program that is designed to give the candidate on the job work experience while completing their technician education. With direct supervision from a Lead Technician, Fleet Maintenance Supervisor or Fleet Maintenance Manager, and through completion of the Republic Preventative Maintenance Program and other on-the job training work done during the the internship, the trainee receives hands on training that supports what they are learning in school. This includes the basic skills necessary to perform routine preventive maintenance, including basic tire work, wheel end components, mechanic skills, knowledge of hydraulics and knowledge of electrical systems. In addition, the intern gains knowledge of vehicle suspension and steering systems to perform routine maintenance and repair.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least six months of prior experience as an automotive technician.

  • Currently or recently enrolled in a diesel mechanic/technician school.

  • Valid Driver's License.

Principal Responsibilities

Perform routine preventive maintenance under direct supervision, to include but not limited to:

  • Tire changes and replacements;

  • Tire rotations;

  • Hose replacements;

  • Light replacements;

  • Repair and replacement of small parts; and

  • Checking and filling fluids.

  • Through course work and on-the-job training, the trainee gains an increasing level of knowledge of basic heavy duty Class 8 truck maintenance.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.

Learn more about this agency Responsibilities * The responsibilities listed below are at the full performance level. * Prepare project work plans for silvicultural examinations, timber stand improvement, and reforestation activities. * Determine pre-commercial thinning, plantation conditions, and health status of forest plots. * Perform reconnaissance and locate timber sale area boundaries in accordance with appropriate (NEPA) National Environmental Policy Act documentation. * Prepare maps and cruise designs regarding layout of timber sales. * Mark, grade, and cruise timber in areas involving only a few silvicultural practices, but with some variation in forest types and composition. * Prepare technical specifications for timber stand improvement, site preparation, tree planting, or silvicultural contracts. * Serve as (COR) Contracting Officer Representative or inspector on reforestation, timber stand improvement, planting or timber marking contracts. * Check for compliance on corrective actions identified during inspections and recommend final acceptance of contracts upon completion. For the GS-7 level: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in Federal Service; OR one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: forestry, range management, agriculture); OR combination of graduate level education and specialized experience that together meets the requirements of the position.
