SUMMARY:

The Physical Therapy Technician maintains and supports the clinic environment in a manner conducive to delivering safe, efficient, and quality patient care. Under the direction of the Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, and Occupational Therapist Assistant, the Physical Therapy Technician assists in carrying out rehabilitation procedures and keeping records of ancillary procedures/processes integral to the operation of the clinic, utilizing the DuPage Medical Group C.A.R.E. Values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence). The successful candidate will play a role in helping to in maintain high patient satisfaction as well as high therapist productivity. The Physical Therapy Technician must have the ability to work effectively in both independent and team environments; to be organized with attention to detail; possess diplomacy and strong interpersonal skills; and have the ability to problem solve and think creatively. The Physical Therapy Technician will perform all job duties as allowed within the Illinois Physical Therapy Practice Act or the Illinois Occupational Therapy Practice Act and the Code of Ethics of the APTA or the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and Ethics Standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Knowledge
1.Modalities

  • Set up and perform modalities including electric stimulation, ultrasound, iontophoresis, fluidotherapy, paraffin wax, cold pack, and hot pack with clinician's instruction.

  • Appropriately drape and position patient.

  • Monitors patient response and discusses with therapist/assistant as necessary.
    2.Exercise

  • Proper patient set-up and exercise as prescribed by the therapist/assistant.

  • Utilizes appropriate education techniques including demonstration, return demonstration, and cuing.

  • Monitor patient's safety and response to exercise intensity and discusses with therapist/assistant as necessary.

C. Receptionist Duties

  • Perform basic functions such as patient check-in, co-pay collection, chart preparation, and answering phones, checking patient's future appointments.

  • Assists receptionists with typing and faxing therapist progress reports in a timely manner.

B. Communication/Interaction
1.Professionalism

  • Maintains a high level of rapport with all patients, therapists, assistants and staff.

  • Communicates with customers when circumstances occur that may negatively impact service expectations, such as unavoidable delays due to emergency situations, or the patient's own lack of effort in their rehabilitation.

  • Demonstrates sensitivity to diversity.

  • Presents self in a professional manner in both appearance and communication.

  • Remains clam under pressure, and maintain a positive attitude regardless of workload demands.

  • Actively listens to patients, and staff to clarify needs.

  • Fosters teamwork amongst all staff.

  • Follows DMG policies regarding dress and absenteeism.

Documentation

  • Timely flowsheet documentation that is legible and complete.

  • Ability to read and understand a treatment program.

C. Quality
1.Patient Care

  • Performs patient and equipment set-up as directed.

  • Utilizes appropriate education techniques including demonstration, return demonstration, and cuing.

  • Executes interventions of modalities or exercise as directed by therapist/assistant.

  • Notifies therapist/assistant when patient response is abnormal.

  • Clarifies prescribed interventions in advance of patient care.
    2.Customer Service

  • Actively responds to feed-back from satisfaction surveys.

  • Seeks ways to increase physician and patient customer satisfaction with service through anticipation, recognizing, and acting to meet customer needs.

  • Follows through on resolution of problems or issues with customers in an expedient manner.

  • Maintains professionalism and exhibits "good" judgment with regards to patient and staff interaction.

D. Productivity/Efficiency

  • Prepares and reviews chart for the day to maximize efficiency.

  • Anticipates patient and therapist needs by setting up equipment and exam rooms in advance.

  • Communicates timely and effectively with therapists and assistants in regards to patient response.

  • Communicates with therapist/assistants when patients are early, running late or have specific needs.

  • Monitors patient flow in the department, when patients are waiting, discusses with therapist/assistant patient care needs.

  • Monitor and direct 2-3 patients at any given time while maintaining professional composure.

E. Initiative/Innovation

  • Takes initiative in assisting therapists, assistants, tech or receptionists.

  • Takes initiative in generating ideas to improve work process, systems or services.

  • Attends required meetings, is on time, and actively participates.

  • Takes initiative to seek additional assignments when other tasks are completed.

  • Provides ideas for improved clinic organization

F. Safety/Clinic Maintenance
1.Safety

  • Constant awareness and maintenance self and patient safety.

  • Adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA) guidelines including universal precautions.

  • Aware of all emergency procedure protocols.

  • Incident reporting is performed and returned within 24 hours.
    2.Clinic Maintenance

  • Notifies supervisor and staff of faulty or damaged equipment; if needed, places equipment out-of service to prevent re-use.

  • Inventory and stock linens and supplies.

  • Clean and maintain all equipment according to established protocol.

  • Complete weekly and monthly maintenance logs.

  • Notify supervisor of inventory and equipment needs.

  • Completes daily Technician Checklist

  • Utilize the Downtime Checklist

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of common physical and occupational therapy abbreviations.

  • Understand principles, as well as contraindications/precautions in the use of physical therapy modalities including electric stimulation, ultrasound, iontophoresis, cold pack, and hot pack.

  • Can identify proper patient set-up on each piece of equipment with the ability to make adjustments

  • Identify planes of movement specific to each joint and understands proper exercise position as described in the PT tech binder.

  • Deep understanding of the fundamental relationship requirements between the Physical and Occupational Therapy department and members of the DMG physician and clinical community.

  • Attention to detail and follow-through.

  • Problem solving, lateral thinking and reasoning skills.

  • Communication skills.

EDUCATION and / or CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • High School Diploma

  • Demonstrated computer skills are required.

EXPERIENCE:

POSITION DETAILS: * PRN, As Needed * Hours: Wednesdays 3:00pm-8:00pm; Saturdays 8:00am-12pm; Intermittent Tuesday Evening Coverage * Location: Plainfield- Division St. SUMMARY: Reporting to the site Manager, and in communication with specific Program Coordinator(s), the Physical Therapist performs examination, evaluation and interventions utilizing the DuPage Medical Group C.A.R.E. Values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence). The Physical Therapist supervises and delegates to Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) and therapy technicians as legally permissible. The Physical Therapist will perform all job duties as allowed within the Illinois Physical Therapy Practice Act and the Code of Ethics of the APTA. The Physical Therapist will be involved in the development and implementation of strategies to enhance relationships with relevant DuPage Medical Group (DMG) physician practices and respond to operational service needs and to maximize referral volume from relevant DMG physicians and practices for appropriate therapy services. The Physical Therapist will work alongside their Manager and Program Coordinators, relevant DMG physicians and clinical support staff and others as appropriate to strengthen physician relationships through positive interactions and education about therapy services and programs. The successful candidate will play a role in helping to increase referrals and maintain high physician satisfaction. The Physical Therapist must have the ability to work effectively in both independent and team environments; to be organized with attention to detail; possess diplomacy and strong interpersonal skills; and have the ability to problem solve and think creatively.  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Knowledge * Evaluation and examination * Adheres to physician orders, and seeks clarification or alterations as necessary. * Performs a thorough chart review and patient history and can accurately interpret chart information including diagnostic and laboratory reports. * Consistently demonstrates knowledge and competency in examination and assessment procedures with regards to strength, ROM, accessory joint mobility, sensory perception, function, balance, and appropriate special tests. * Determines the level of impairment or limitation as well as the possibility of contributing factors and pre-existing conditions. * Determines any immediate safety risks, or contraindications to physical therapy, and acts appropriately. * Creates a problem list based on evaluation and examination findings. * Performs routine re-evaluations using objective measurements. * Starts appointments no later than 10 minutes beyond the scheduled time. * Follows DMG policies regarding dress and absenteeism. * Plan of Care * Establishes appropriate prognosis and treatment plan based on evaluation findings, pre-existing conditions, and patient goals. * Sets functional and objective goals which are based on the problem list. * Includes a time frame in plan of care. * Demonstrates knowledge of departmental protocols. * Modifies and/or progresses plan of care based on patient response, possible change in patient status, and re-evaluation findings. * Physical Therapy Interventions * Assigns appropriate interventions to address limitations and to achieve desired functional outcomes. * Applies modalities with regards to contraindications and precautions. * Monitors patient response to modalities, therapeutic exercise, and manual therapies. * Appropriately delegates interventions to be performed by qualified personnel, while considering the level of complexity and other patient related factors. * Supervises the follow-through of delegated activities. * Chooses appropriate educational interventions including posture, ergonomics, body mechanics, gait training, transfer training, pain management, and DME usage * Takes responsibility for recommending, ordering, and instruction in use of equipment for the patient. * Discharge * Performing re-evaluations to determine if goals have been met. * Educates patient and/or family members on HEP progression and self-care maintenance as appropriate. * Makes appropriate recommendations when goals have not been met. * Communication/Interaction * Professionalism * Maintains a high level of rapport with all patients, staff, and physicians. * Communicates with customers when circumstances occur that may negatively impact service expectations, such as unavoidable delays due to emergency situations, or the patient's own lack of effort in their rehabilitation. * Demonstrates sensitivity to diversity. * Presents self in a professional manner in both appearance and communication. * Remains clam under pressure, and maintain a positive attitude regardless of workload demands. * Actively listens to patients, and staff to clarify needs. * Fosters teamwork amongst all staff. * Maintains patient confidentiality. * Documentation * Timely completion of documentation: 24 hours for daily notes; 48 hours for evaluations. * Documents all aspects of evaluation and examination findings, patient history information, plan of care- including prognosis and goals, and discharge plan. * Records all treatment interventions and outcomes. * Addresses progress toward goals or provides reasoning for lack of progression. * Documentation supports the continuation of treatment. * Directly communicates with physician and other clinicians (verbally or written) in regards to evaluation, progression and discharge as appropriate. * Documents in medical record any and all communication with patient, physician, or other related persons. * Reports consent for all necessary interventions. * Education * Utilizes appropriate education techniques including demonstration, return demonstration, handouts and cuing. * Discusses with patient and appropriate family members/care givers information on prognosis and plan of care. * Provides instruction to family and/or caregivers on ways to assist the patient with activities or treatment procedures to be performed at home. * Quality * Patient Care * Utilizes current research and theory to justify treatment and evaluation approach. * Performs repeated/regular functional testing to re-assess progress. * Updates plan of care and goals based on results from objective/functional testing. * Utilizes examination as well as subjective questioning to rule out related diagnoses. * Provides appropriate education to patients and care givers on prevention and self-care maintenance based on impairments and physical therapy diagnosis. * Customer Service * Actively responds to feed-back from satisfaction surveys. * Seeks ways to increase physician and patient customer satisfaction with service through anticipation, recognizing, and acting to meet customer needs. * Follows through on resolution of problems or issues with customers in an expedient manner. * Maintains professionalism and exhibits "good" judgment with regards to patient and staff interaction. * Productivity/Efficiency * Maintains productivity at the performance expectation- this benefits not only the therapist, but the support staff, and the department as a whole. * Manages personal schedule, if required, for patient needs as well as to manage productivity. * Communicates well with reception in regards to scheduling needs and personal style of scheduling (e.g. double booking, ½ hour evaluations, specialty area of treatment). * Utilizes technicians to maintain high level of efficiency throughout the work day. * Educates technicians on personal style of patient care to maximize time. * Documentation is completed in a timely manner. * Initiative/Innovation * Education * Physical Therapist will choose annual continuing education that is complementary to their chosen specialty program(s) in alignment with licensure requirements * Takes advantage of all continuing education opportunities available; and appropriately applies newly acquired knowledge to patient care. * New Graduates to spend $1,250/year for first two years plus a MedBridge subscription; all other staff to spend $1,000/year.
