Overview

Position duties include but are not limited to: supervising, coordinating and assisting technicians with repair and/or maintenance service of all new and rental equipment in the shop and on customer job sites.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, motivates and provides leadership for the technicians including: performance evaluations; paid time off; assessing skills and competencies; administering policy and procedures as it relates to the staff; coaching; mentoring and training to assure development of technical skills and employee satisfaction and retention.

  • Coordinates the work flow by assigning jobs (shop and customer site) to the appropriate technicians according to the technician's schedule and expertise; communicates expectations of time; ensures that jobs are completed within the required time frame.

  • Assists technicians in completing assigned work of repairs, service maintenance and/or verifying routine maintenance verses customer damage including assisting with repair related problems; verifying the quality of work by setting high quality standards of repair and measuring conformance for the standards; providing on the job training and completing repairs personally as assigned.

  • Maintains the shop area and equipment, including keeping the shop area and equipment clean, organized and in good working order and suggesting equipment replacement when needed to ensure safe working conditions.

  • Assists in accomplishing the department's goals by sharing responsibility for; customer satisfaction, rework, quality, turnover, employee satisfaction, etc. and controlling expenses in relationship to volume.

  • Performs customer service duties to establish positive, cooperative, working relationships with customers, including providing customers with specific information regarding work to be performed on their equipment.

  • Eliminates the cause of errors that result in customer dissatisfaction and financial matters, including promoting safety within the department.

  • Equipment deadline is to be maintained at or below 1% of fleet cost. Deadline report should be submitted to the Branch Manager daily.

  • Maintenance files are to be updated daily.

  • Preventative maintenance program followed as to 10% due for service or below, 0% over 120 days.

  • Internal shop repair orders are due to be completed and on manager's desk daily.

  • The shop deadline, service line, and equipment staging area to be kept clean and well organized

  • Check delivery trucks every week for maintenance

  • Walk the ready line daily to ensure proper maintenance is being performed

  • Do minor repairs, A-inspections, direct washing of equipment, maintain a clean office, oversee cleanliness of shipping and parts room.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through a high school education or the equivalent with additional training preferred through a vocational school.

  • 2 years of work related experience in an industry related technical function, preferably with Caterpillar, supervisory experience and a working knowledge of shop tooling procedures and capabilities or the equivalent.

  • Strong communication skills, including verbal, written, non-verbal, listening and presentation skills

  • Strong customer service skills with basic prospecting skills and the ability to meet and/or exceed customer expectations.

  • A strong knowledge of the product and a good knowledge of the product market with a strong respect for the Caterpillar/vendor influence.

  • Good creative thinking, decision-making and goal setting skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills, including influence, negotiation, coaching and counseling.

  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to administer warranties and interpret and apply policies, procedures, guidelines and laws.

  • A good ability to manage change and conflict and basic interviewing, performance evaluation and project management skills.

  • A good ability to operate industry specific PC and main frame programs with a basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel and data base systems.

  • The ability to uphold professionalism with both internal and external customers, including personal appearance and friendly, courteous treatment of peers, subordinates and customers.

The position is responsible for testing, repairing heavy equipment, ordering parts and the job documentation associated with the repairs. Additional responsibilities include; assigning work, assisting technicians in the troubleshooting and completion of work, facilitating efficiency in repairs by assisting technicians with parts and tooling, adhering to Cat Contamination Control guidelines, adhering to all safety regulations and training new technicians on safety rules and best practices. Team Lead provides critical on the floor coaching, mentoring and leadership for their team of technicians. Position reports and communicates daily to the Service Supervisor. Responsibilities * Responsible for safety performance of self and team, reinforcing adherence to all OSHA regulations and safety rules. Promotes and reinforces a culture of safety first by regularly observing technicians at work, assessing the safety of their behavior, the conditions in which they are working and providing regular, timely feedback. * Diagnoses and repairs equipment in the service shop. * Completes all required job documentation accurately and efficiently; this includes properly allocating time to each job, writing service reports, tracking parts charged and parts returned and remanufactured / warranty core returns. Ensures team of technicians are completing respective job documentation accurately and efficiently. * Leads technician workforce; coordinating work assignments and communicating customer expectations for each assignment. Team Lead informs Shop Supervisor of any changes made to the scope of work on the shop floor. Responsible for self and team adherence to company policies and procedures, providing coaching and delivering feedback to employees on an ongoing basis. Maintains strong healthy relationships with each technician based on mutual trust & respect, good communication and liberal application of the Golden Rule. Participates in annual evaluation with technician and supervisor. * Assists the service technicians in completing assigned work for repairs and service maintenance, troubleshooting and assisting with repair related problems as needed. Responsible for verifying "quality of work," setting high quality standards for repairs and measuring conformance to such standards. * Maintains customer satisfaction by understanding customer needs and deadlines, completing scheduled repairs and service as safely, timely and accurately as possible. Eliminates the root cause of errors which result in customer dissatisfaction. * Acts as major contributor in accomplishing the department's financial goals; sharing responsibility for all results such as profitability, expense management, customer satisfaction, rework, quality, turnover and employee satisfaction. * Maintains company issued equipment and tools, keeping them in good working order. * Maintains good housekeeping (5S) in shop area and equipment; keeping it clean, organized and in good working order. Technical background provided through a vocational school with studies in diesel equipment repair. * 3-5 years of mechanical experience with heavy equipment, preferably with Caterpillar.
