Performs laboratory tests and services to support customer data generation through sample processing and DNA extraction. Uses a variety of scientific techniques, instrumentation, and disciplines by performing the following duties"

  • Performs sample and reagent preparation, DNA extraction and isolation, quality analysis prior to genotyping, analysis of reagents for performance, and other related tasks.

  • Assist in the training of new assistants and interns in order to better manage laboratory workload.

  • Proficiency in providing input to the best ways to maximize laboratory efficiency.

  • Proficiency in a variety of molecular biological techniques.

  • Maintains laboratory notebooks, archives, and sample or specimen repository.

  • Assists in maintaining the laboratory including ordering supplies and equipment, calibrating instruments, performing preventive maintenance, and assuring a clean and safe environment.

  • Follows established SOPs accurately and efficiently, supports ISO procedures.

  • Meets individual and departmental goals and objectives

Education and/or Experience: Associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.) in science or lab related field; or 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) is preferred.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word Processing and Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet software.

Other Skills and Abilities: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Will learn and understand basic microbiological techniques associated with fermentation as well as comply with standard operating procedures and all regulatory documents. Demonstrate good communication skills using verbal, non-verbal and written skills. Utilize mechanical skills to maintain equipment and identify mechanical problems. Position Responsibilities Demonstrate safe work habits and maintain a safe work environment. Understand and comply with safety SOPs and procedures (Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) guidelines, Near Miss, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), biohazard training, Monthly Safety training, etc.) Demonstrate reliability in attendance and punctuality Learn and understand basic microbiological techniques to prepare and maintain cultures, including inoculating, inactivating, harvesting and dispensing product as applicable to bacterial antigen production Learn and comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and associated documentation necessary to perform job functions Train in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), then demonstrate understanding and compliance Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills within and outside the department using verbal, written, and non-verbal skills Demonstrate the ability to perform mathematical calculations and metric conversions Learn and assist in the completion of documentation including process worksheets and log sheets Learn to operate, clean, and perform minor maintenance on equipment such as fermenters, seed isolators, centrifuges, filtration units Assist with reading and reporting testing results using scientific instruments Use mechanical skills to identify mechanical problems and maintain equipment Clean areas, as applicable, according to specific SOPs Obtain license and operate mobile powered material handling equipment (i.e. forklift, tank tugs, etc.) Perform supplemental duties as assigned by supervision Education and Experience Minimum High school degree or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications: Four years of college with a Bachelor's degree in science, or Business Administration, or four years of supervisory experience. Minimum of 4 yrs. experience in a manufacturing environment. Knowledge of PC using window based applications Grade level of position will depend on the experience and education level of successful candidate.
