Position Purpose
Ensures FWISD compliance with fire safety codes and regulations concerning fire safety and suppression equipment; inspects, repairs, services, and recharges equipment. Install and repair fire alarm systems, smoke and heat detectors and magnetic door holders. Assist in the design and specification of fire alarm systems and equipment
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Conducts regular equipment inspections and services equipment as needed (fire alarm systems, voice evacuation systems, and other life safety devices) to ensure proper operation; tests equipment; performs repairs on equipment, replaces parts, and/or coordinates with maintenance staff to handle as appropriate.
Performs regular systems inspections to correct deficiencies and trouble indications.
Assists in the design and specification of fire alarm systems and equipment; reads and interprets construction plans, specifications, and riser diagrams.
Installs, diagnoses, and repairs/replaces wiring, devices and control panels for fire alarm systems; reads and interprets construction plans, specifications, and riser diagrams; maintains and repairs smoke and heat detectors, magnetic door holders, and fire alarm system components.
Maintains accountability and inventory for assigned tools and equipment; maintains records of equipment including location and dates of inspections, condition and type of the equipment during inspections, dates of installation and servicing; maintains and orders supplies for fire safety and suppression equipment.
Stays current on fire prevention safety standards and codes.
Coordinates fire alarm system repairs with other trades and personnel as necessary.
Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition.
Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
Handles and disposes of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of Fire Detection and Alarm Device Installation.
Knowledge of alarm design, specifications and components.
Knowledge of fire safety codes, safety protocols, and District rules and regulations applicable to a variety of equipment and systems found in public school systems (e.g., fire extinguishers, kitchen hood suppression, sprinklers).
Knowledge of the maintenance, servicing, and repair of fire safety equipment to perform routine and emergency work as required.
Knowledge of general maintenance practices and procedures and the proper use of hand and power tools and equipment.
Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
Ability to work at various heights including ladders up to 18 feet tall, and perform various repairs without supervision.
Ability to work independently or with a helper depending on workload demands.
Ability to perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
Ability to use software to status work orders, do email, and do word processing.
Ability to organize and coordinate work.
Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.

Travel Requirements
Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard hand and power tools; specialty test equipment; electrical measuring and testing equipment; standard office equipment, including computer, tablet, and peripherals; light truck or van.
Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
Lifting: Occasional heavy lifting and carrying (less than 50 pounds) on a daily basis.
Environment: Works outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; may work on rooftops; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; works around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work irregular and prolonged hours; frequent reaching and feeling while in confined spaces and around objects, which reduce or prevent visibility of what is being touched; occasionally works at heights up to 30' above ground; frequent districtwide travel.
Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours and/or change in shift schedule with little or no advance notice.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.
Certification/License: Valid Texas Fire Alarm Technician (FAL) license or ability to renew within 30 days of hire date.
Experience: 3 years' fire alarm service and repair required.
Additional Requirements: Employees must provide necessary personal tools to perform assigned duties. The FWISD is prohibited from replacing stolen or broken personal property.
INSURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DRIVERS
Must be at least 21 years old.
NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
Driving and accident record:
Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations http://dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/driverrecords.htm
NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance;
equipment violations.
NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license.
NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD's Fleet Insurance Carrier.
