ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $47,725.00 - 71,586.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $52,000.00 - $65,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

The City of Fort Collins Natural Areas is celebrating 30 years of sharing special habitats like prairies, foothills, waterways, and forests conserved for wildlife and people.  There are 52 conserved natural areas and 114 miles of trail with more being added each year. But the preservation of these natural areas doesn't just happen; it's the result of the work of hundreds of volunteers and paid staff who dedicate themselves to these lands in our neighborhoods, around our city, and in our region.

The Technician II, Natural Areas is a full-time (40 hr/week) position for the Facility Operations Division with the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department. The typical schedule for this position is a compressed work week with four

  • 10hr days either Monday

  • Thursday or Tuesday

  • Friday. This position performs work related to facility maintenance for the department including the optimal utilization of the department's facilities, including assessing, and evaluating physical space requirements of the department and recommending plans to meet needs, and ensuring proper functioning of facilities through ongoing inspection and maintenance. The Facility Operations division is responsible for maintaining and repairing the Natural Areas 18 office and shop buildings, 7 residences, one meeting facility, 23 vault toilets, 20+ historic structures, and associated facility infrastructure such as irrigation, backflows, landscaping, vegetation management, solar gates, call boxes, shelters, utilities, waste management contracts, line painting, and concrete and asphalt surfaces. This team also plays an essential role in city-wide trash cleanup operations related to homelessness by working collaboratively with contractors, Police, Neighborhood Services, Natural Areas / Parks Rangers, Social Sustainability, and other partners.

This employee will perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks to maintain Natural Areas facilities, historic structures, vault toilets, and related infrastructure. These activities include but are not limited to: cleaning, maintaining inventories and supplies, minor equipment repair and maintenance, parking lot maintenance, snow removal, and small to large scale facility repair work. This position is also involved in maintaining the departments inventory of solar gates, managing contractors, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) assessments and compliance work, hazardous material management and abatements, herbicide applications, and utility infrastructure maintenance throughout City of Fort Collins Natural Areas including several regional properties. The ideal candidate has a background in contractor management, site demolition work, asbestos and lead based paint management and abatement, ADA assessments, pollution prevention practices, historic restoration practices, solar gate maintenance, and facility maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Recommends and implements a variety of work tasks including: habitat improvement actions, trail alignments, grazing strategies, and infrastructure improvements.

  • Performs or oversees such activities as keeping inventory, purchasing, grounds and landscape maintenance, irrigation water management, carpentry, cleaning, removing trash, and making general repairs as necessary.

  • Coordinates and assists crews involved in the control of weeds on City natural areas.

  • Designs and implements systems to construct, inspect, and maintain unpaved trails, structures, and various types of fences.

  • Coordinates and participates in restoration activities such as seeding and maintaining native grasses and wildflowers, planting and maintaining native forbs, shrubs and trees.

  • Coordinates and implements wildlife management activities such as population counts, surveys, etc., as well as habitat improvement and population management projects

  • Operates equipment necessary for maintenance, visitor amenities, and vegetation management projects, including tractor, mower, seed drill, spray and water truck, weed whip, chainsaw, table saw, dump truck, backhoe, loader, snow plow, all-terrain vehicle, skid steer, chipper, and various hand and power tools.

  • Cleans and performs simple maintenance procedures for vehicles, equipment, and tools.

  • Provides training and guidance to seasonal employees, contract laborers, and volunteers.

  • Skilled in operating and maintaining vehicles, power tools, irrigation systems, and heavy equipment, including pickup trucks, tractors, seed drills, mowers, dump trucks with trailers, spray and water trucks, weed whips, chainsaws, table saws, dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, snow plows, all-terrain vehicles, skid steer, chippers, and various hand and power tools

  • Ability to effectively train, oversee, motivate, and work as a team with seasonal employees and volunteers

  • Ability to work effectively with other natural areas technicians and staff as a team to accomplish program goals.

  • Ability to work occasional weekends, when necessary.

  • Ability to perform routine administrative tasks such as answering the telephone and using a computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Ability to be self-directed, responsible, and use good judgment.

  • Ability to work alone or in a group.

MinimumPreferredAssociates / Bachelor's degree or other specialized skill training / certification may be required in some positions

  • Two to four years natural areas maintenance related work experience., or a combination of education and experience.
