ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $42,952.00 - 64,427.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $45,000.00 - 56,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

The City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department has an opening for a Technician I, Natural Areas position within the Trails and Visitor Amenities division which is responsible for construction and maintenance of various visitor amenities including trails, footbridges, boardwalks, benches, parking lots, vault toilets, fencing, and signage. This team also plays an essential role in city-wide trash cleanup operations related to homelessness by working collaboratively with contractors, Police, Neighborhood Services, Natural Areas / Parks Rangers, Social Sustainability, and other partners.

This role is a fully benefited, full-time, in-person position that typically follows a compressed work week with four 10-hour days either Monday

  • Thursday or Tuesday

  • Friday, with occasional early mornings, late evenings, or weekends as needed. Seasonality often determines the specific needs to maintain certain trails and visitor amenities. For example, summer months require extensive vegetation management while winter months require snow removal to ensure accessibility and preserve visitor use experience. Other operations need attention year-round. The Natural Areas Department maintains over 100 miles of soft surface trail ranging from single track to accessible crusher trails. The ideal candidate is familiar and skilled with the use and maintenance of a wide variety of tools and equipment, such as weed-whips, backpack sprayers, toolcats, skid-steers, dump trucks, snowplows, power tools as well as hand tools like pick mattocks and McLeods.

This position will work independently, as part of the team, and in coordination with contractors, volunteer groups, and other City staff. The ideal candidate will have at least two (2) years of experience working outdoors in a natural resources or landscape management setting. They should be skilled and passionate about this wide variety of work and be someone who maintains a positive attitude, has strong initiative, and a firm commitment to safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Perform or oversee general maintenance of Natural Areas such as grounds and landscape maintenance, restoration and weed control, or construction and maintenance of visitor amenities.

  • Train and guide the work of seasonal employees, contract laborers, and volunteers.

  • May be assigned to keep inventory, purchase tools and supplies, perform carpentry tasks, clean, remove trash, and make general repairs as necessary.

  • May perform weed control using various techniques including applying herbicides, mowing, or hand-pulling. Will also oversee work crews performing weed control activities.

  • Operate and maintain equipment including tractor, mower, seed drill, spray and water truck, weed whip, chainsaw, table saw, dump truck, backhoe, loader, snow plow, all-terrain vehicle, skid steer, chipper, and various hand and power tools.

  • May assist and support the construction, inspection, and maintenance of trails and various types of fences.

  • May perform and assist with design and building of benches, kiosks, foot bridges, and boardwalks.

  • May help to plan, design, and implement site-specific maintenance, public improvement, and habitat enhancement projects.

  • May assist with or oversee wildlife management including monitoring, pest control, and habitat enhancements.

  • May assist with or oversee vegetation monitoring.

  • May be required to use technology to input data or work actions.

  • Perform job duties in accordance with safety procedures associated with specific tasks.

  • Extensive knowledge and comprehensive experience of natural areas facilities maintenance and management.

  • Skilled in design and construction of public improvements, including fencing, soft trails, kiosks, signs, benches, boardwalks, and foot bridges.

  • Skilled in plant and animal identification and the use of integrated weed management techniques.

  • Ability to effectively train, motivate, and work as a team with seasonal employees and volunteers.

  • Knowledge of local natural areas and wildlife habitat enhancement techniques.

  • Ability to perform routine administrative tasks such as answering the telephone and using a computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Ability to be self-directed, responsible, and use good judgment.

  • Ability to work occasional weekends, when necessary.

  • Ability to work alone or in a group.

Required Qualifications

MinimumPreferredHigh School Diploma or GED and or functionally related licenses or certificates

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years related experience in natural resources or landscape management.
