Job Description Summary

As a Technical Writer, you will be responsible for planning, research, and technical writing support for medical device industry. The position will be based out of Rochester, NY (Remote initially)

  • Creates, develops, plans, writes and edits operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia, web-based publications and user sites; may produce content for embedded user assistance technology.

  • Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for non -technical and technical users.

  • To document engineering processes and specifications.

  • To Recommend formats responsive to technical and customer requirements.

  • Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards.

  • Exceptional writing and communication skills.

  • Write clear, simple content that speaks to customers in their own language.

  • Collaborate openly and effectively with a range of stakeholders, including writers and subject matter experts.

  • Successfully negotiate project schedules, plans, and milestones.

  • Understand how regulations, laws, and standards influence content design.

  • Maintain design documentation to support quality and regulatory process requirements.

You'll need:

  • Experience in technical communications, writing/ composition, or similar related field

  • Service manual authoring experience

  • Authoring in XML in a single-source content development environment

  • Experience working with cross-functional project teams

  • Knowledge of software technologies used for writing, publishing, and document control

  • University Degree or College Diploma

  • At least 2-3years' experience in writing technical manuals of medical domain or lab equipment is preferred;

  • Experience with Epic Editor, HTML and Adobe Frame maker (or similar) is preferred

Skills & Experience

Adobe Technical Communication Suite, Software Technical Writing, XML Authoring, Technical writer for software product development

We're looking for a Technical Writer who will play a key role in the growth of our Product & Engineering (P&E) organization by creating and improving the best practices for high-quality technical documentation. Whether it's a new joiner going through onboarding material, or an employee interested in the latest and greatest of our internal (or external!) technologies, we need someone to ensure that this information can be both readily found and easily comprehensible. That's where you come along! At Compass, you will: Formalize our information architecture * Creating best practices in the use of various tools such Google docs, Confluence, and GIT that will present complex information in an easy, clear and concise manner * Proposing and implementing other document management tools when new use cases arise Innovate and raise the bar on how we organize, deliver and discover information * Develop operational procedures for documentation that will enable our P&E members to learn, grow, and deliver faster * Get creative! Standardization is great, but there isn't always a one-size fits all solution Curate and Improve * Our onboarding documentation * Our internal and external technical documentation Guide and mentor * Training product and program managers, designers, and engineers but also collaborating with them, gathering feedback, and continuously improving the art of technical documentation Qualifications * B.S. in a technical discipline or equivalent experience * 4+ years experience of working in a technical writing role * Ability to write in a explanatory and procedural style for multiple audiences * Proficiency in various documentation management tools * Excellent communication skills and detail oriented * Ability to deliver through ambiguity for multiple projects at once * Possessing a "get things done" attitude and being scrappy to deliver on outcomes * Proven ability to work directly with highly technical engineering teams * Interpersonal and relationship building skills within a diverse, cross-functional team * Possessing a passion for continuous improvement At Compass, our mission is to help everyone find their place in the world.
