The William B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas conducts a vigorous research program in Space Plasma Physics. Our goal is to advance our understanding of the evolution of Solar System bodies and their interaction with the Sun.
The Center seeks a qualified Laboratory Manager/Technician to join its collaborative team. This individual will provide a wide range of technical services in a laboratory environment including the assembly of space flight hardware for a NASA mission.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school graduation or GED, supplemented by technical training in areas related to the specific research activity, college-level courses in physics, electrical engineering, & related disciplines, or completion of associate degree in electronics; 8 yrs exp in the skilled construction, operation & maintenance of sophisticated electronic equipment, including 3 yrs of exp in scientific research & field operations in the particular branch of technology or science involved; or any equivalent combination of education or exp.
Preferred Education and Experience
Required Qualifications
Experience with circuit board kitting and bill of materials (BOM)
Experience reading and using circuit board drawings such as schematics, artworks, and assembly drawings/instructions
Experience with hand electrical assembly including soldering, crimping, inspection, rework and cleaning
Experience using a wide range of hand tools for assembly, repair of equipment and mechanical parts
Experience using Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Strong attention to detail
Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment
Ability to prioritize and work through a large number of tasks
Preferred Qualifications
Previous NASA soldering, wiring, conformal coating and inspection certification
Experience with special assembly and handling processes for space-flight hardware
Spot welding experience
Gas torch soldering experience
Experience with mechanical piece part assembly
Experience with SolidWorks CAD software
Experience with Altium PCB Design software
Machining experience including end mill, band saw, drill press, break, shear, press, sander/grinder and/or bead blaster
Experience with equipment troubleshooting and repair (mechanical and electrical)
Experience working with ultra-high vacuum systems
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Work with an engineering team to produce space flight instrumentation for a NASA satellite project
Perform electronic circuit board assembly including thru-hole and surface mount parts
Perform circuit board kitting including working with an electronic database system for component stock tracking
Perform circuit board cleaning, inspections, and rework
Perform assembly of cables, harnesses, and custom electrical equipment
Maintain a laboratory facility including the upkeep of equipment, materials, chemicals, workstations and environmental test systems
Lead the upkeep and certification of electrostatic discharge protection equipment and materials
Perform procurement, receiving, inspection and storage of parts, materials, chemicals, equipment and tools
Perform comprehensive periodic laboratory checks
Monitor and log access to secured and controlled areas
