POSITION SUMMARY:

The Technical Services Coordinator supports three major departments in the Delta College Library: Acquisitions, Serials, and Cataloging.

The Technical Services Coordinator is responsible for ordering library materials and supplies; receiving them; verifying for accuracy; and working with vendors. Serials maintenance includes the responsibility for oversight of all aspects of periodical maintenance. All books and e-books received are cataloged and processed by the Technical Services Coordinator.

The Technical Services Coordinator maintains statistics and works with various library and college employees. This position also assists with the Laptop Lending Program and serves as backup to the Circulation area. The position requires someone with proficient technology skills as a variety of software and databases are used daily.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Acquisitions

Items ordered for the Delta College Library collections are routed through this position. Typical daily responsibilities include interacting with librarians and staff, requisitioning library materials which are requested in a variety of formats; ensuring material check-in procedures are followed and items are processed within set timelines; initiating inquiries and filing claims for missing/back-ordered materials; processing invoices for payment; managing the book budget; requisitioning library supplies; reconciling vendor statements and preparing a wide range of reports for managers.

Serials

All serials ordering, cataloging, and processing are completed by this position. Serials maintenance involves oversight of all aspects of periodical management, including downloading new serial records from OCLC; check-in of materials; updating title changes, ceased titles, and new titles; withdrawal and discard of materials; running monthly overdue lists; and claiming missing items from vendors and publishers.

These processes require the use of Horizon, OCLC, and Word/Access/Excel. Other duties include maintaining a current, up-to-date list of local serials holdings for staff and patrons.

Cataloging

Books and e-book records are downloaded from OCLC and loaded into the Library Management System by the Technical Services Coordinator, and material descriptions and record information is verified. Discarded items are also withdrawn from the catalog to maintain library database control. Book processing and repair are responsibilities of this position, as are duties related to Government Documents.

Team Responsibilities

Maintain statistics for Library Manager and Librarians and keep area procedure manuals updated. Take responsibility for opening Library.

Attend college and library staff meetings as well as VLC Database meetings. Remain current in library technologies.

Circulation/Laptop Program

Support the Circulation desk by checking out items and helping patrons when needed. Assist with Interlibrary Loan and supervising student workers. Assist librarians with Laptop Lending Program.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or equivalent knowledge/skills.

  • 1 - 3 years of position related experience.

  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and problem solve independently.

  • Ability to use oral and written communication effectively and work in a team environment.
