The Translational Neuroscience Laboratory (PI: Sabina Berretta) and the Translational Molecular Genomics Laboratory (PI: Torsten Klengel) at McLean Hospital seek a scientifically minded individual with excellent organization skills and attention to detail to join our teams as a technical research assistant (RA). The RA will, under general supervision, assist in research investigating the molecular mechanisms of brain disorders in the mammalian brain to gain further understanding of debilitating human psychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Depression and PTSD, as well as neurological disorders such as Huntington's disease. This role will include dissections of human brain samples, molecular/wet lab and data driven approaches. Applicants should have a strong interest in preclinical as well as translational neuroscience. This position requests a two year committment.

The Berretta Lab focuses on the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders, focusing on their molecular and genetic underpinnings. Dr. Berretta is also the Director of the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center. Her lab utilizes human postmortem tissue in combination with a diverse set of methods, including histochemistry, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization in combination with light, fluorescence and confocal microscopy to investigate the extracellular matrix in the brain. The Klengel Lab focuses on molecular genomics of major psychiatric disorders with an emphasis on epigenetic and transcriptional regulation. The Klengel Lab has a highly translational approach studying psychiatric disorders in animal models and humans using genomic technologies, in-vitro models and molecular assays. Both labs maintain a highly interactive collaboration sharing expertise and ideas.

Working under the general supervision of a Senior Technical Research Assistant, Manager or Principal Investigator and following established policies and procedures, conducts a variety of routine experiments where methodologies are clearly established. Calculates, transcribes and analyzes data using basic statistics. May perform literature searches under direction of supervisor.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Process tissue samples (including dissecting postmortem human brain samples, sectioning with a microtome/cryostat, and immunohistochemistry)

  • Process clinical data including digitalization of paper documents

  • Perform DNA, RNA and protein extraction and analysis techniques (including western blots, PCR and qPCR)

  • Run statistical analyses on collected data

  • Perform general lab upkeep, such as preparing shared solutions and maintaining a clean and tidy work environment

  • Manage email and schedule

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Professional interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Meticulous handling of sensitive data with regard to data safety and protection

  • Great organizational skills, detail oriented.

  • Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic statistics.

  • Ability to perform a variety of routine tests and prioritize work.

  • Adequate computer skills required.

  • Prior wet lab research experiences are desired but not mandatory

QUALIFICATIONS:

BS or BA in a biological/physical science required.

Previous lab experience and leadership experience preferred.

All employees must possess basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes.

A full-time Research Assistant (RA) position is available within McLean Hospital's Treatment & Etiology of Depression in Youth Laboratory (https://WebbsLab.com), directed by Christian Webb, PhD (Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School). The lab is part of the Center for Depression, Anxiety and Stress Research, which is devoted to the study of depression, anxiety, and related conditions (http://cdasr.mclean.harvard.edu). The TEDY Lab is currently investigating the causes and treatment (via psychotherapy) of depression, using EEG, fMRI, behavioral and self-report assessments. As a member of our scientific team, you will work closely with Dr. Webb, fellow research assistants and a postdoctoral fellow. You will gain hands-on experience with recruiting and screening both healthy and depressed teens and adults, as well as conducting experimental procedures with them. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides assistance on research studies as per study guidelines and protocols. 2. Recruits and evaluates potential study patients. Per protocol guidelines, conducts telephone interviews to determine study eligibility and schedules participants for study visits. 3. Responsible for collecting questionnaire, behavioral, and fMRI data from participants. 4. Develops, organizes, and/or maintains the study database. Responsible for data validation and quality control, as well as preliminary statistical analyses. 5. Answers any phone call and inquiries regarding study protocol. Refers participants when appropriate to supervisor or clinical staff. 6.Assists with literature searches, preparation of reports for Institutional Review Board and compliance with regulatory agencies. 7. Assists with monitoring the laboratory budget, including ordering equipment. 8. Maintains inventory and orders supplies when necessary. 9. Assists Dr. Webb with scheduling. 10. Assists with preparation of abstracts, posters, and manuscripts generated by the primary study or other studies conducted in the laboratory. The student may be offered the opportunity to present any work conducted in the laboratory at a local, national, or international conference at his or her discretion. 11. Performs all other reasonable duties as assigned.
