GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

A position is open for a full-time research assistant in a molecular biology lab focusing on the cellular and molecular regulation of skeletal muscle growth and metabolism. The ideal candidate will have a degree in the Biological Sciences or Biotechnology.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the candidate is expected to perform different cellular and molecular techniques to examine the biological processes involved in muscle homeostasis and disease.

  • Molecular biological techniques (DNA/RNA extraction and purification, molecular cloning, standard and quantitative PCR)

  • Cell/tissue processing, culture and maintenance

  • Mouse colony management and genotyping

  • Record data, summarizes, and analyzes results using basic statistics

  • Prepares laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment

  • Maintains supply inventory in accordance with departmental procedures

  • Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor

  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree with a strong background and demonstrated ability in biological science laboratory techniques

  • Strong analytical skills - ability to problem solve and troubleshoot

  • Intellectual independence and initiative

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Molecular cloning (DNA digestions, ligations, colony screens)

  • PCR Primer design

  • Cell culture (aseptic technique, splitting cells and maintaining lines)

  • Isolation and purification of DNA/RNA

  • PCR

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work/tasks

  • Must be willing to learn and grow

  • Sound degree of computer literacy

  • Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic statistics

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to perform as a team member

  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism

  • Some occasional weekend or evening flexibility may be required
