Technical Research Assistant Ll BWH Neurology

Working very independently, under very general supervision, executes protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine experiments at a professional level. May identify new techniques. Develops modification of existing techniques, as appropriate. In collaboration with other members of the research team, gives input to the development of design protocols. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using statistical techniques. May be responsible for orienting and training new staff.

May serve in a supervisory role in smaller lab.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Under general supervision will breed and maintain common use mouse strains and use molecular techniques (PCR) and cellular techniques (flow cytometry) to genotype transgenic and knockout mice.

2.Maintains basic records of mouse breeding, methodologies and test results in a log of work performed.

3.Performs basic cell culture and in vitro assays and performs analysis by multi-parameter flow cytometry.

4.Performs DNA quantification, plasmid DNA isolation and DNA analysis by restriction digest.

5.Performs in vivo experiments including tumor implantation, measurement, and treatment of tumor-bearing mice, and induction and monitoring of autoimmune disease.

6.Performs gene expression analyses using quantitative PCR.

7.Assists in the orientation and training of new staff in established laboratory techniques.

8.Coordinates daily schedule of experiments.

9.Responsible for data management: collects, records, tabulates and presents data. Creates graphs of experimental, performs statistical tests, and discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.

10. All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

BS in a biological/physical science required.

Must have at least one-year experience in a directly related research setting.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

• High degree of computer literacy

• Experience working with mice is desired

• Sound analytical and organizational skills.

• Requires good oral and written communication skills.

• Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks and set priorities

• Ability to identify potential problems and trouble-shoot solutions.

• Strong interpersonal communication skills.
