Job Description

As a Smiths Detection intern, you will have the opportunity to be working side-by-side with highly skilled individuals dedicated to making the world a safer place through technology innovations. Our intern assignments are designed to allow you to experience, first-hand, the type of work we do within Smiths Detection. As an intern, you can make an impact on the business as well as continue to build your analytical, technical and leadership skills.

Technology Programs delivers Project and Program Management excellence to drive the development of technology in the Americas and beyond in the Smiths Detection Business. The business area provides Project Management oversight for major development activities to deliver and sustain capabilities to our world-wide customers. Key to delivering these outcomes is the R&D or Engineering Function.

In order to drive efficiency, reduce costs, and assure timely delivery, project managers must coordinate cross-functional teams to ensure appropriate effort is provided to each project. This requires a robust, on-line tool to allow prioritization of projects based upon key metrics. This internship will focus on adapting an online tool developed at another company site and porting it onto U.S. based servers. The individual will work with the Smiths Technology organization, in both the U.S. and abroad, to implement this tool.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Learn processes used by Smiths Detection for project initiation and management.

• Interface with key stakeholders to understand current gaps and identify places for improvement in project management processes.

• Port Jira-based sotware package to Edgewood based servers.

• Adapt single point of entry (SPOE) process to prioritize projects based upon project metrics.

• Build form for users to submit SPOE requests to Jira-based ticket system.

• Author manuals and develop training for developed solution.

• Work on-site at Edgewood, MD.

• Complying with and promoting all relevant legal requirements and Smiths policies and procedures, including business ethics, data protection and health & safety

The Individual

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Degree-track undergraduate student in computer science or related fields.

• Experience in developing user interface applications and analytic software for database integration.

Desired Characteristics:

• Ability to work in matrixed environment with individuals from different professions (i.e. engineers, software developers, project managers, etc.)

• Programing skills in Python, C++, Java

• Platform experience working with Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Office

Eligibility Requirements:

• You must be 18 years or older

• You must be willing to work in an office in Edgewood, MD

• You must be willing to take and pass a drug test as part of the selection process

• You must be willing to submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process
