We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Manufacturing Chemist within our Abbott Rapid Diagnostics business located at Westbrook, Maine. In this role, you will be responsible for making critical and non-critical bio-reagents for use in product and manufacturing processes.

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics (formerly Alere) is part of Abbott's Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry-leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.


  • Maintains and supports production schedule

  • Investigates problem areas and areas of desirable improvement

  • Follows and supports SOP and document system

  • Able to perform technical procedures and use lab equipment



  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) or equivalent combination of education and experience in science-related field.

  • Fundamental laboratory skills


  • Fundamental classes in Biology, Immunology and Chemistry

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

  • Independent thinking and creative problem solving

  • Experience in the following areas:

  • Pipette experience

  • Spectrophotometry

  • HPLC

  • pH Meters

  • Gel Electrophoresis

  • SDS Page

  • ELISA assays

What you can expect in this role * You will oversee day-to-day manufacturing activities, assign and monitor production, and review work for accuracy and quality. * You will manage staff, promote training and development, and evaluate performance. * You will collaborate with internal partners on coordinating work and resolving issues to ensure production build plan and customer satisfaction goals are met. * You will coordinate work with outside vendors and contractors to service and onboard equipment. * You will contribute on new product transfer and product support teams. * You will prepare reports and other information summarizing work activities and report results to peer groups as well as senior management. You will prepare various analyses as needed to highlight issues and resolve questions. * You will develop and implement strategies through team initiatives to increase efficiency, maintain quality, and ensure continuous improvement of policies, systems, and procedures. * You will perform budget planning, capital equipment expenditures, expense control, non-conforming material control, and operations training to meet manufacturing operating and business objectives. * You will utilize data, metrics, and system tools to ensure efficiency and to maximize customer experience. * You will lead/contribute to improvements based on evaluation of existing procedures and business needs. What you will need to succeed * You have a bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * You have 2+ years of lab or biotech industry experience. * You have a proven track record of team management and leadership, with the ability to manage responsibilities and priorities in a fast-paced environment under strict deadlines. * You can manage multiple priorities and shifting demands calmly and effectively. * You have experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably with experience in bio-conjugation processes. * You have excellent customer service and business relationship-building skills. * You have critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills to resolve issues in an efficient, positive manner. * You can organize, prioritize, and direct work activities. * You have strong communication skills, both verbal and written. * You can summarize and effectively present information to various audiences including senior management. * You have experience working in an ISO and USDA regulated environment. * You have a solid understanding of the key drivers of manufacturing performance and how manufacturing capabilities can be used to drive competitive advantage. * You understand supply chain and quality management. * You have data analysis and data-driven decision-making skills, experience with statistical analysis and tools are a plus (examples: JMP, Excel). * You possess personal computer skills, including Microsoft Office; proficiency in SAP is a plus.
