Summary:

The Technical Instructor I/Animal Care Specialist Course Instructor will support the training services for the 68T10 Animal Care Specialist (IET) Course, Animal Health Branch (AHB), Division of Veterinary Science (DVS), Department of Force Health Protection (DFHP). The primary objectives are to assist in developing accurate and effective instructional and technical support materials, achieve student success through the conduct of the training, and provide accurate and timely technical information and support to leadership.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Providing classroom or laboratory instruction and/or training support under the supervision of the Program

  • Teaches assigned Animal Health Branch classes according to approved course syllabi.

  • Assisting in developing curriculum and instructional materials, conducting training (both didactic and laboratory based), providing subject-matter expertise, setting-up and breaking down laboratories and emergency lanes, inventorying and ordering teaching supplies needed, providing oversight of two Animal Use Programs (AUP 21-04 and AUP 21-05) involving the use of live tissue training.

  • May be the primary instructor or may assist the primary instructor in providing oversight during laboratories of animals, ensuring an instructor: student ratio of 1:4 during laboratories involving live animals.

  • Curriculum delivery will provide a basic knowledge of the Animal Care Specialist (Veterinary Technician) Career Field to include anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and dose calculations, microscopy, physical restraint of animals (dogs and cats), physical examination of animals (dogs and cats), veterinary nursing care, veterinary parasitology, veterinary radiology, veterinary anesthesiology, veterinary surgical support, and emergency and critical care medicine.

  • Training objectives are achieved through lecture, group activities, demonstration, hands-on instruction, clinical observation, clinical experience (including surgery support and anesthesia monitoring), and computer-based or blended learning options.

  • Will assist with up to 100 hours of performance evaluations and testing per iteration of the 68T10 Animal Care Specialist Course to assess students' knowledge and skill development.

  • Provide laboratory, inventory management, or visitor access support during non-teaching hours. They will also review curriculum and make suggestions for improvement.

  • Plan and provide student instruction in accordance with approved curriculum guidelines and required program standards. Instructors assist in developing, revising, and implementing approved curriculum and contribute to the enhancement of the learning experience of all students.

  • Utilizes appropriately challenging coursework to help students realize their full potential as learners.

  • Provides students with verbal and/or written expectations, e.g., syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, graded evaluations.

  • Administers and evaluates tests/assessments which are appropriate to course content.

  • Maintains an appropriate learning and assessment climate in the classroom, whether traditional, web, or distance, which encourages the free exchange of ideas while defending academic honesty and objectivity.

  • Prepares adequately for class and arrives promptly at class meetings, labs, and any other scheduled instructional activities.

  • Delivers material in a clear and understandable manner. Addresses student concerns, i.e., comments, questions, and input, both in class and via office hours, timely electronic communication, and other suitable means.

  • Develops assigned curricular content.

  • Designs and implements assigned instructional didactic and laboratory activities. Assists with activities to maintain program accreditation.

  • Maintains effective relationships with professional counterparts throughout the program and installation. Additional tasks may include providing laboratory support and set-up, providing oversite of two Animal Use Programs, inventorying supplies, ordering supplies, and providing access control for Jennings Hall by checking the identification of all students and other visitors that enter the secured facility.

  • Remains an engaged, positive, and productive member of the team.

  • Shall perform work in concert and conjunction with government Animal Health Branch Instructors and according to technical course guidance provided to government and Contractor Instructors.

  • Instruction may be conducted in a virtual environment over the internet using programs such as Blackboard, Microsoft TEAMS, ZOOM, VCLASS or other virtual enhancement programs. This may require monitoring and responding to questions or message board information/requests. Deliverables: student, course and/or instructor evaluations.

  • Assists with or performs animal physical exams, restraint, sedation, tracheal intubation, IV catheter placement, monitoring of anesthetized patients and anesthesia adjustment.

  • Perform humane euthanasia when required.

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, laboratory cleanup and sanitation.

  • Trains Soldiers in a wide variety of individual and team skills typically employed in a veterinary facility. Skills taught include (but are not limited to): (blood draws, various injection methods, physical exams, obtaining diagnostic skin scrapings, ear exam, ear cleaning and medicating, applying eye and skin medication, toe nail trimming, animal restraint, IV catheter placement, dosage calculation, tracheal intubation, monitoring of anesthetized animals, obtaining an ECG from a patient, position patients for radiographs, take diagnostic radiographs, surgery room sanitation, surgery room preparation, support to the surgeon, perform dental prophylaxis, take dental radiographs, post-surgical patient care, wound management, bandaging, manual WBC counts, differential counts, operation of automated laboratory equipment, fecal exams and ova identification, ectoparasite identification, handle and restrain common laboratory animals, surgical instrument identification, assemble surgery packs, sterilize surgical packs, clean and maintain surgical instruments, etc.).

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and as reasonably requested by the program.

  • Effectively able to advise students.

  • Be able to read, write, and speak English

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication and presentation

  • Possess good interpersonal relationship skills necessary for establishing and maintaining a good learning and working environment with students and faculty.

  • Be capable of learning and utilizing current and emerging military and commercial

  • Be proficient with the Microsoft Windows 10 and Microsoft Office suite and incorporated programs to include Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Access; be proficient with photo editing software (specific item may vary).

  • Be able to troubleshoot basic computer hardware and software required for services being provided under each individual task order.

  • Able to stand and walk around classroom/laboratory for 8 hours continuously.

  • Must be able to restrain animals up to 100lbs and lift animals up to 50lbs alone.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum Two years' experience in the veterinary field as a registered veterinary technician (RVT) or licensed veterinary technician (LVT) preferred.

  • If not licensed, the instructor should have at least five years of experience working as a veterinary technician with dogs and/or Military Working Dogs (MWDs) specifically.

  • A license in any state or jurisdiction as a registered veterinary technician (RVT) or licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is preferred.

  • Instructor should also preferably have experience in the Army as an Animal Care Specialist 68T with at least five years of experience working with Military Working Dogs in a clinical setting.

  • Experience with anesthesia, surgery, emergency, and critical care is Required.

  • Documented expertise in their area(s) of teaching responsibility and knowledge of the content delivery method (e.g., distance learning).

  • Evidence of expertise in teaching assignments might include documentation of continuing professional development, relevant experience, faculty development plan reflecting acquisition of new content, incorporation of feedback from course evaluations, and other sources.

  • Ability to successfully pass a background check.

  • The instructor is subject to random drug tests on demand, as they will have access to controlled drugs.

  • Must have an initial Occupational Health Clearance which will clear the instructor for working with dogs and cats.

  • The instructor must provide an occupational health clearance MEMO within 5 days of starting the position that states they are cleared for risk Category 3.

  • Rabies Titer Results must also be reported and be in compliance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years of academic and experiential qualifications and backgrounds (identified in documented descriptions of roles and responsibilities) that are necessary to meet program objectives and the mission of the institution.

  • Instructor is preferably licensed in any state as a registered veterinary technician (RVT) or licensed veterinary technician (LVT) (preferred) and/or has experiences with Military Working Dog Veterinary Medicine.
