At Bristol Myers Squibb, we are inspired by a single vision - transforming patients' lives through science. In oncology, hematology, immunology and cardiovascular disease - and one of the most diverse and promising pipelines in the industry - each of our passionate colleagues contribute to innovations that drive meaningful change. We bring a human touch to every treatment we pioneer. Join us and make a difference.
Cell Therapy is one of the most groundbreaking new forms of cancer treatments being studied today. With therapies only in their infancy and BMS's continued investment in our Cell Therapy capabilities, the growth potential of this science, your career, and the ability to help patients are incredible.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:
We seek a Technical Fellow to leverage her/his considerable technical knowledge and broad industry-wide expertise to shape BMS' stem cell-based cell therapy platform processes to support BMS' allogeneic gene-engineered therapy portfolio. The Technical Fellow will serve as BMS' internal subject matter expert on pluripotent cell production platform technologies and will derive the vision and strategic rationale for short- and long-term goals, which must fit within BMS's cell therapy ambitions. As part of the role, the Technical Fellow will create the roadmap for best-in-class pluripotent stem cell platform design and advise, consult, and mentor process development and integration project teams. The incumbent will be responsible for creating an innovative and realistic vision for our stem cell-based platform that must address many engineering areas across cell characterization and pluripotency maintenance, cell differentiation and reprogramming, genetic engineering, and large-scale expansion and product formulation. Additionally, the Technical Fellow is expected to write white papers and external publications and support drafting and assembling regulatory documentation in preparation for clinical trials and commercialization. Ultimately, this role will provide the necessary technical and strategic expertise required to realize robust manufacturing processes for IND and commercial-enabling production scales. The Technical Fellow will work closely with the respective technical lead, who manages the execution of BMS's stem cell work, and the Allogeneic Platform Lead, who oversees BMS's technical implementation of allogeneic cell therapy projects.
The ideal candidate has professional industrial experience in pluripotent stem cell biology and commercial-scale design and is a well- regarded expert on gene-engineered stem cell-based production platforms. As a thought leader, the Technical Fellow will be a cross- functional matrix leader without direct reports but is expected to steer our allogeneic platform development and technology teams. The incumbent will bring their considerable expertise across multiple technical fronts to support business development efforts and must be adept at creative problem solving and innovation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leverage considerable experience to design a multigenerational pluripotent cell technology and production roadmap to support
clinical trials and commercial launch, within the rigors of BMS' portfolio needs.
Consult and advise lab-based project teams on process design, technology integration, and study execution. Serve as an
inspiring and motivating matrix leader.
Partner with engineering teams to design testable hypotheses, prioritize experiments, and review data. Provide insights to
maximize the chance of success and mitigate risks.
Draft and publish technical documentation, including white papers, risk assessments, technical reports, external publications,
invention disclosures, due diligence reports, and provide regulatory filing support.
Assist with strategic planning across the allogeneic cell therapy portfolio.
Leverage strong verbal and written communication skills to provide regular updates to senior leaders, technical governance and
other stakeholders.
Serve as a force multiplier for BMS' allogeneic cell therapy engineers, scientists, associates and staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Advanced degree in immunology, biotechnology or related discipline required, Ph.D. is preferred; industrial product/process
development in stem-cell based production systems with demonstrated experience is required (15+ years)
Documented track record of innovation and industry-wide expertise in stem cell biology, genetic engineering or reprogramming,
mammalian cell culture and differentiation into different cell species.
Proven success in optimizing commercial-scale bioreactor platforms for stem cell-based therapies or other stem cell-based
approaches.
Experience in gene editing approaches (e.g. Crisp/Cas9) or leukocyte biology highly desired
Must be a visionary thought leader with a strategic mindset and an understanding of technological and scientific trends across
the stem cell therapy space.
This position can be fulfilled in a remote work setting.
