The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Southcoast Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Technical Engineer 1 / Architect 1 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

This position reports to the DOT&PF, Southcoast Region, 7-mile office located in Juneau. Southeast Alaska is an area of unique habitats surrounded by temperate rainforests on steep-sided mountains, glaciers and marine waters presenting abundant recreational opportunities and even exceptional engineering design challenges.

The Southcoast Region encompasses Southeast and Southwest Alaska. You will review pre-construction engineering products for communities stretching from Adak to Kodiak and Yakutat to Ketchikan.

What you will be doing:

The position serves as the Southcoast Region`s Quality Assurance and Standards Engineer. Duties range from helping designers perform efficiently through the production of regional standards to leading plan, specification, and estimate reviews in the office and on field trips.

Who we are looking for:

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:

  • Experience developing plans, specifications and estimates for transportation-related civil design projects;

  • Development of technical documents, such as Engineering Design Study Reports, Erosion and Pollution Control Plans, etc.;

  • Familiarity with AK DOTPF, FHWA and FAA project development criteria and specifications;

  • Experience coordinating with functional support groups (location survey, utilities, right of way, construction, maintenance and operations, geotechnical investigations, hydrology and hydraulics, etc.) for project development; and

  • Familiarity with NEPA process for project development.

Minimum Qualifications

Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Special Note:

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

What you will be doing: The Administrative Officer performs a broad range of essential functions for the Division of Administrative Services, its director and the rest of the department. The Administrative Officer is responsible for the internal budget, accounting, procurement, and personnel work of the Division of Administrative Services and the Commissioner's Office. This position supports 36 positions and monitors a $5.8 million annual budget. The Administrative Officer also plays a crucial role in leading communication between the Division and other department divisions and agencies regarding policies, processes and procedures, and shared challenges.
