PolyOne is seeking a future Plastics Engineer to participate in a summer internship that will focus on the Technical Development Engineering role at PolyOne Distribution. This training will expand their knowledge in plastic materials, reading technical data sheets, understanding material property test procedures, troubleshooting processing issues, optimizing conversion processes, conducting material comparisons and providing options for both part and tooling design.

During the internship, they will establish relationships with peers and leaders, learn business and technical fundamentals and be provided feedback from their manager. Upon completion, participants may have the opportunity to join PolyOne after graduation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Shadow Senior Technical Development Engineers

  • Participate in resolution of customer processing issues or quality complaints

  • Address customer's technical request as needed

  • Coordinate and track testing of materials with suppliers or other PolyOne business units

  • Develop technical training materials as needed

  • Shadow Senior Technical Development Engineers and help make a difference at PolyOne's

  • Travel up to 75%

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Sophomore or Junior currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Plastics Engineering Technology or similar

  • Basic understanding of plastic materials, processing plastics and Design of Experiment

  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficiency with MS Word & Excel

This Intern position is a paid internship located in Romeoville, IL. Reliable transportation is required. Housing assistance is provided and pay is commensurate with experience.

Job Summary: This position brings together the essential skills typical of an industrial engineer, such as process flow analysis, time and motion studies, project planning, efficiency studies and development of labor standards that conform to the MTM Association guidelines. Knowledge or experience with 5S or lean manufacturing is desirable. Responsibilities: * Identify and eliminate wastefulness in production processes * Devise efficient ways to use workers, machines, materials and information to improve products and services * Read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and industry standards (AWS, ASTM) * Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers * Effectively present information to management, both verbally and through presentations * Apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques and sampling theory * Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in developing corporate standards for labor productivity across multiple locations Required Skills: * Bachelors of Science in Industrial Engineering or university program certificate * Three or more years related experience and/or training * Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint * Possess strong problem solving, analyzing and examining skills to find the best solution for various situations * Ability to work well with all levels of the operation * Ability to identify areas in process improvement, efficiencies, capacity or safety * Ability to independently monitor and analyze labor standards/billing hours and take appropriate action * Ability to manage projects * Ability to travel 15-35% of the time Preferred Skills: * MS Access or Project Management * Knowledge or experience in Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing * MTM Association for Standards and Research certification/license The above job description is intended to describe the general content of and requirements for the performance of this job.
