Job Description Summary

DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the CPAC Supervisor, ensure the overall safety and organization of technical production areas, create technical and esthetic solutions for dramatic productions and other programs offered to the public, supervise others in the safe use of technical equipment and materials, and perform other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Technical Coordinator is distinguished from other positions in that the incumbent fuses artistic and technical methodologies in collaboration with faculty, students, and other artists to produce live and recorded performances. This position requires a high level of both technical and artistic prowess to mediate between the needs of the artistic team and the safety of cast, crew, and audience; the consequences of error in this position may be lethal. The incumbent must have excellent interpersonal skills to work with students, staff, community members and volunteers in the realization of the technical and esthetic needs of stage production. The incumbent must also have strong time management skills to juggle multiple assignments and meet deadlines, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends.

Incumbents in this position contribute to institutional effectiveness and encourage a learning environment by monitoring the safe use of materials, equipment, and systems used in the Cultural and Performing Arts Center.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Technical Coordination of Facility:

  • Develop and implement health and safety procedures that will govern all users of the CPAC facility and fall in line with OSHA and Fire Marshal requirements and guidelines;

  • Develop and implement procedures for the use of CPAC technical systems and equipment;

  • Coordinate scheduled maintenance and repair of CPAC technical systems and stage and scene shop equipment in consultation with Technical Director and CPAC Supervisor;

  • Monitor the facility for security and liability issues and coordinate with proper campus resources to resolve;

  • Work with the tech team in order to research and purchase new and replacement equipment;

  • Work with the tech team in order to implement and maintain storage solutions for equipment and materials;

  • Explain and monitor the restrictions and safety issues of the various theater spaces for both technical and non-technical students, staff, and clients;

  • Maintain inventory of scene shop equipment, stage properties, and construction consumables.

Technical Coordination of Production:

  • Determine production requirements through script analysis and consultation with production team;

  • Develop and monitor the budget for the technical aspects of play production;

  • Develop technical production calendars for productions; schedule load-ins, light hang, painting periods, dry and wet technical rehearsals;

  • Draft technical drawings for the construction and layout of stage scenery and props;

  • Develop materials lists, order, and pick up materials and equipment;

  • Oversee safe and esthetic construction of scenery and props for production, monitor proper use of light and sound equipment for production, and complete difficult tasks beyond the time commitment and abilities of the technical crew;

  • Coordinate the set-up of audience seating and soft-masking with Technical Director;

  • Coordinate strike call (dismantling procedures for taking apart and restoring scenery, props, and equipment);

  • Coordinate lab time schedule with faculty and monitor student safety during use.

PREFERRED FUNCTIONS

Production Design:

  • Conceptualize and design one or more of the following components: scenery, props, and/or lighting. Duties may include:

  • Create scale model or other illustration of scenery such as 3D virtual or rendering;

  • Draft set design plates to include ground plan, front elevations, sectional views, and detail drawings as needed to communicate design to technical crew and production team;

  • Create color palette in concert with other design team members;

  • Draft light plot and subsequent paperwork to include patch sheets and instrument schedules;

  • Design and program the movement of stage lighting and effects through a production (cueing).

Duties may require the ability to:

  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl;

  • Reach in all directions;

  • Read and comprehend printed matter, text, and data on computer monitors;

  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and email;

  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;

  • Lift and/or carry 50 pounds;

  • Possess manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

  • Associate's degree with a concentration in technical theater and design.

Experience:

Required

  • At least two years of experience in technical theater

Preferred Experiences

  • Four years of experience in technical design, with two of those years in a technical theater management position;

  • Experiences both in and out of academia.

  • Or any equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge of:

  • Safety regulations as it applies to the theater complex and equipment used there within;

  • Use of the following software types: Microsoft Office suites (i.e., Word, Excel, etc.), CAD drafting programs and 3D modeling programs (i.e., AutoCad, Vectorworks, Spotlight, Google Sketch up etc.), image manipulation and layout (i.e., Photoshop, Illustrator);

  • Engineering principles, specifically comprehension of dynamic load calculations as it applies to scenery and rigging;

  • Tools, materials, methods, and terminology used in stage carpentry, props, metalworking, rigging, and electrical processes;

  • Tools, materials, methods, and terminology used in art processes such as paint systems, color theory, theatrical coatings, etc.;

  • Stage equipment such as orchestra pit, fly gallery, and traps;

  • Production and design process and timeline as it applies to scenery, sound, and lighting.

Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties;

  • Communicate, orally and in writing, complex technical ideas and systems thoroughly, and then effectively translate the same information to non-technical people;

  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

License and Certificates:

Required

  • Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

SALARY SCHEDULE

Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per Cuesta College's bargaining agreement, new employees are placed at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below.   • Salary Schedule Range: $5,027 - $6,111 per month.

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,027 - $5,543 per month.
