Job Description:

The Technical Accounting Manager advises and supports the Company on complex accounting matters. Specifically, the Technical Accounting Manager will conduct technical accounting research and document conclusions on transaction accounting topics to inform management decision-making. In this role, you will be engaged to support various complex transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, debt and equity transactions, etc. contemplated by the organization, to ensure the Company arrives at the correct accounting conclusions. The ability to understand the flow of financial information through all systems and collaborate effectively with many internal teams as well as external valuation specialists will be critical to success in this role. This is a high-visibility role, operating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring the ability to adapt quickly and provide timely information to management for analysis and decision-making related varying complex transactions.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as US GAAP resource, including preparation/review of technical accounting memos, and analysis.

  • Monitor major corporate events, including mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, debt and equity transactions, derivative instruments, leases, etc. Research, analyze, and document accounting and reporting implications and assist with related complex accounting journal entries, reconciliations, and disclosures.

  • Oversee technical accounting related to M&A activities, including purchase accounting and accounting policy alignment considerations. Prepare for the integration of new acquisitions.

  • Analyze new accounting guidance from the FASB, SEC, and other regulatory bodies, including evaluating the impact of new guidance on the Company's financial statements. Implement and educate team members of necessary changes and ensure proper disclosure.

  • Perform technical accounting research and prepare detailed accounting analysis to arrive at a proposal of accounting treatment.

  • Effectively write and review technical memorandums to support accounting positions for the Company.

  • Work with cross-functional teams, including legal, finance, tax, business development, and internal audit, to analyze complex accounting transactions and ensure proper accounting treatment.

  • Work with valuation specialists to provide necessary support needed to facilitate valuations.

  • Compile relevant historical, budget, or forecast data needed for certain undiscounted and discounted cash flow analysis.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as cross-functionally with teams across the organization to take on new tasks with high level of difficulty.

  • Review joint venture accounting and consolidations for certain community investments.

  • Conduct periodic reconciliations and reviews of certain accounts to ensure their accuracy.

  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors regarding accounting and financial reporting related deliverables as assigned.

  • Assist with special projects including but not limited to process improvement, SOX improvement, and perform various other tasks and ad hoc analysis, as assigned.

  • Provide back-up and assigned duties for other members of the finance team.

  • Effectively collaborate and communicate across departments and with management.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.

  • 6+ years of progressive experience in public accounting (Big 4 / Next 4) or accounting for a publicly traded company with demonstrated technical accounting skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and SEC rules and regulations, as well as Sarbanes-Oxley.

  • Experience in technical accounting research and documentation.

  • M&A accounting experience is required.

  • Multiunit commercial real estate experience is a plus.

  • Experience with computer-based accounting systems, Yardi a plus.
