Overview

We are seeking a full-time Team Leader Marine Survey in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of Marine Surveyors in the collection and post-processing of marine survey and other field data to be used in creation of cartographic products and features.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee Marine Survey associates in collection, processing, interpreting, and manipulating of raw marine survey data to produce output suitable for publication in one of Garmin's cartographic products

  • Lead Marine Surveyors in security, safety, readiness, efficient operation, transport, and maintenance of assigned Garmin boats, equipment, and trucks

  • Manage team travel logistics, budget allocation/tracking, planning and scheduling of surveys for the program

  • Collaborate with other marine leadership to develop and continuously improve processes/procedures dealing with collection and processing of bathymetric survey data

  • Mentor/train Marine Surveyors, assuring competence, professionalism and expertise

  • Participate in survey planning, feature content, performance and quality standards development

  • Serve as subject matter expert on survey processes, procedures, software/equipment technologies to support cartography and engineering management needs

  • Partner with Engineering Management to help develop performance and quality goals for our survey processes

  • Ensure team meets overall performance/quality goals in accordance with the survey plan and feature content requirements

  • Oversee final grids prior to quality control review and delivery to production

  • Coordinate development efforts with Cartography Development Teams to assure timely and accurate transfer of data between groups

  • Facilitate teamwork with other groups both inside/outside of Garmin

  • Ensure team maintains/ensures compliance to Garmin Fleet Management and DOT guidelines while in the field and in the office, including the E-Log duty status system

  • Oversee 3rd party contractor business agreements, invoicing, and data delivery

  • Participate in recruiting activities, interview, hire, train, and evaluate performance for the team including performance evaluations and any other HR matters

  • Travel and work in the field for consecutive weeks as needed

  • Perform routine inspections/maintenance of hydrographic survey equipment including calibration and operation of tools

  • Troubleshoot/share knowledge with team to identify and fix marine engine malfunctions to restore to operating condition

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in cartography, geography, hydrography, oceanography, or related degree AND a minimum of 5 years of experience performing bathymetric surveys using multi-beam systems and RTK positioning equipment or a substantially similar role OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

  • Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations to successfully operate Garmin vehicles safely, must have knowledge of all city, federal, and state traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in motor vehicle operation

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and physical for DOT regulated position

  • Previous coastal boating experience

  • Previous experience working with Marine Cartography or Marine Survey team (or similar external experience)

  • Demonstrated previous leadership experience

  • Able to lift as much as 55 pounds while using safe lifting techniques

  • Previous experience with trailering operations

  • Demonstrated experience and track record in safely and efficiently operating, transporting, and maintaining boats similar to those used by survey teams

  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and must demonstrate strong troubleshooting skills

  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to effectively manage technical human resources

Desired Qualifications

  • USGS Captain's License (OUPV/6-Pack), Merchant Marine Master or Uninspected Passenger Vessel Operator license

  • Extensive experience in maintenance and operation of small boats and trailering operations

  • Ability to read and understand tide, current and weather conditions and effect on navigation and safety

  • Experience with Kongsberg multi-beam systems

  • Experience using Qinsy acquisition software

  • Experience using Qimera data processing software

  • Experience using Beamworx Autoclean data processing software
