Position Summary & Core Responsibilities:

The Dean's Office Finance Team Lead Financial Manager plays a crucial role in managing financial processes, data analysis, and reporting within the School of Medicine (SOM). This position serves as an integral member of the Office of Finance team, and will act as a resource and mentor for the Financial Analysts on the team. The Team Lead Financial Manager collaborates with various units, oversees budgeting, and ensures efficient commitment management and budget to actual analysis. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proficient in data analysis, and capable of making proactive and informed decisions based on data-driven insights.

Core Responsibilities:

1.Budget & Spend Monitoring, Financial Analysis, and Reporting (50%):

  • Develop budget allocations for E&G and other fund sources within the SOM.

  • Review spending patterns and identify significant variances.

  • Prepare reports on revenue and expenditure data for management.

  • Incorporate performance and staffing metrics into financial analyses.

  • Evaluate expenditures based on programmatic needs.

  • Collaborate with Dean's Office Finance team on student funding workflows and ensure accurate tracking of student-related financial transactions.

  • Cross-train on all finance functions throughout the Dean's Office Finance Team

2.Database Management and Workflow Tracking within Anaplan (30%):

  • Utilize Anaplan to build and track workflows related to commitments, budgeting, and budget to actual reporting.

  • Maintain accurate records of commitments and financial transactions.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure data integrity and efficient processes.

3.Internal Audit Testing Manager (10%):

  • Oversee internal audit testing activities for financial processes.

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and policies for Procurement Cards, Index Reconciliation and Records management.

  • Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions.

  • Collaborate with auditors and address findings.

4.ARMICS Coordinator for Dean's Office (5%):

  • Coordinate ARMICS (Annual Risk Management and Internal Control Self-Assessment) activities for the Dean's office.

  • Update ARMICS process control assessments annually or as staff changes occur.

  • Manage annual internal audit testing and compliance efforts.

5.Facilities Project Accounting/Reporting (5%):

  • Monitor SOM facilities project allocations and expenses

  • Produce regular reports on project status and financial requirements.

Team Leadership

  • Serve as a resource and mentor to the team, providing guidance and support to enhance skills and career growth

  • Provide back-up support to the Director of Resources & Budget Management when needed

  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., finance, business administration, data science).

  • Progressive professional experience in budgeting, financial planning and analysis

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage complex financial processes.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Must be pro-active in asking questions and seeking guidance when needed.

  • Must be precise, thorough, and reliable and perform daily activities with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to multitask, managing time and competing priorities in a dynamic environment

  • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Anaplan, Excel, SQL).

  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., finance, business administration, data science)

  • 5-7 Years' experience in budgeting, financial planning, and analysis

  • Strong leadership & team management abilities

  • Experience with Anaplan or similar FP&A Software
