Job Description

We invite applications for a non-tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor. This faculty position is expected to teach in the graduate program in Organizational Communication and undergraduate program in Professional Studies. These courses are offered at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park and online. The candidate will be expected to teach in various formats such as in-person, hybrid, and online.

The appointment is a Fiscal Year (12-month) appointment with an initial term of 3 years. This appointment carries a teaching component, which includes a typical course load of eight courses annually (three in the fall, three in the spring and two in the summer). This appointment also carries a service component. Subsequent appointments may be offered, contingent upon a satisfactory comprehensive performance evaluation during the final year of this appointment and approval of the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

Special consideration will be given to applicants committed to excellence who can contribute to the University's innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary initiatives to educate leaders, build healthy communities, and make discoveries that will change the world. This position serves the education needs of a Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) program. Specific percentages of effort for JCERT are determined each year.

Teaching - 75%

This position is responsible for teaching eight (8) courses annually, typically three in the fall, three in the spring and two in the summer. The courses must conform to the curricular needs of the programs. In addition to teaching courses, the incumbent should be available to students for advising, consultation, and research supervision.

  • Develop and teach eight (8) courses each year focused on the current Organizational Communication and Professional Studies curriculum and potential new courses.

  • Develop assignments; design class activities; respond to and evaluate student work in a timely manner; assign grades; and adhere to department, college, and university policies.

  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty in the School of Professional Studies to ensure that the curriculum continues to meet the needs of our students, school, university, and transfer pipelines.

Service 15%

  • Actively promoting the graduate and undergraduate programs through various recruitment and promotional activities;

  • Mentoring students;

  • Assisting the Program Director with program assessment activities;

  • Participating on committees at KU and the School of Professional Studies;

  • Contributing to the activities of community outreach and professional development;

Scholarly Engagement 10%

  • Enhancing and improving program curriculum;

  • Engaging in scholarly pedagogical and professional development activities;

  • Produce publications of peer-reviewed disciplinary or pedagogical research;

  • Promote best practices in teaching and learning, which could be produced through workshops, presentations, and publication, including newsletters, websites, to peer-reviewed journal articles;

Required Qualifications

For this Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor position, the following are required qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Communication Studies, or a closely related field, is expected by the start date of the appointment.

  • One year of experience teaching Organizational Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Workplace/Business Communication, Leadership Communication, or closely related disciplines.

  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by application materials and interview process.

Rank of position will be determined based upon years of qualified professional teaching experience in Organizational Communication, Human Resources, Training, Learning and Development, or related fields:

  • Assistant Teaching Professor: 1 - 5 years

  • Associate Teaching Professor: 6 - 11 years

  • Teaching Professor: 12+ years
