Teaching Professor (Open Rank) - Health Science

Job Description

The Director of the Health Sciences program in the School of Professional Studies invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor. This faculty position is expected to teach in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program and corresponding Minors. These courses are offered at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park and online. The candidate will be expected to teach in various formats such as in-person, hybrid, and online.

The appointment is a Fiscal Year (12-month) appointment with an initial term of 3 years, with a typical course load of 3 classes each fall and spring semester and 1 course each summer semester. Subsequent appointments may be offered, contingent upon a satisfactory comprehensive performance evaluation during the final year of this appointment and approval of the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

This position serves the education needs of a Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) program. Specific percentages of effort for JCERT are determined each year. The KU Edwards Campus is in Overland Park, Kansas.

Teaching

• 70%

Serve as faculty in the Health Sciences program. The courses must meet the curricular needs of the program.

Develop and teach seven (7) courses per year.

• Prepare for and attend all class meetings; Develop assignments, design class activities, respond to and evaluate student work in a timely manner, assign grades. Adhere to School of Professional Studies and university policies.

• Develop and update syllabi, study guides, instructor's guides, test questions, tests, and web-based material. Participate in regular meetings with instructors and staff as needed. Assist in the development and implementation of technology and student-centered pedagogies in courses. Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.

• Adhere to School of Professional Studies, Edwards Campus, and university policies and procedures. Work collaboratively with faculty in the Health Sciences Program and School of Professional Studies to ensure that curriculum continues to meet the needs of our students, school, university, and transfer pipelines. Engage with local community college faculty to ensure strong transfer pipelines and clear curriculum goals for each institution. Engage with employers and other workforce planners to determine workforce needs of the future and translates those needs into academic curriculum given discipline standards. Ensures continued relevance of the curriculum to meet student needs.

Scholarly Engagement

• 15%

• Research efforts will contribute to the mission of teaching faculty primarily in the areas of pedagogy and student retention.

• Teaching faculty may contribute to course transformation efforts and assessment; conduct and presents research on teaching and learning and/or typical disciplinary scholarship. This includes partnering with faculty members to teach and implement creative and effective mechanisms for improving student learning, engagement, and retention, especially in large introductory courses.

• Areas of focus for publications and/or presentations may include but are not limited to the scholarship of assessment and curriculum design, development of new undergraduate laboratories/research opportunities and/or new teaching methods, supervision and evaluation of undergraduate research in the professor's area of research expertise, methods to enhance online course resources outside of class time and use of active learning activities to maximize concept mastery during face-to-face class and laboratory/discussion time, development of programs, workshops, and training guidelines that feature research-based instructional practices (including but not limited to inquiry and discovery based instruction, student centered instruction, peer-mentoring, and the integration of technology into the classroom).

• Teaching faculty may involve graduate research assistants (GRAs) in their research, and in the case of master's students, they may Chair the student's graduate committee.

Service

• 15%

• All teaching faculty members are expected to mentor undergraduate students. Teaching faculty are expected to perform service to the department's constituent communities: the department, the School of Engineering, the University, the State, the Nation, and the profession.

• All teaching faculty are expected to be members of appropriate unit-level undergraduate committees, and other committees as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. or terminal professional degree in nutrition, dietetics, or closely related discipline

• Experience in and evidence of effective teaching at the college level, particularly online teaching.

• Ability to teach a variety of undergraduate nutrition courses as evidenced by previous health science or nutrition teaching experience, including intro to nutrition, nutrition assessment, lifespan nutrition, and other advanced courses based on their interest area and expertise; potentially other relevant health sciences that align with program needs.

• Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills as evidenced by application materials and interview process.

• Demonstrated interest in pedagogical design and improvement in course teaching as evidenced by previous scholarly work.

• Rank of position will be determined based upon years of demonstrated experience in teaching college-level introductory Health Sciences courses:

• Assistant Teaching Professor: 3-5 years

• Associate Teaching Professor: 6-11 years

• Teaching Professor 12+ years

Preferred Qualifications

• Training and/or experience in course design and/or course transformation, particularly online courses.

• Professional publication record in the relevant field or in scholarship of teaching and learning.

• Training and/or experience in introducing and embedding research into courses and/or departmental curriculum.
