Who You Are

You are exploring a career as a teacher. You might be a recent (or soon to be) college graduate or a career changer. You are craving hands-on experience in classrooms and want to work alongside experienced educators who can help guide you.

Characteristics and Qualities of an Ideal Applicant

Below are some of the skills, experiences, and dispositions that we're looking for in an applicant.

  • You have experience working with youth. This might be as an afterschool program employee, tutor, camp counselor, community volunteer, or paraeducator.

  • You want to pursue a career in teaching.

  • You believe that all children can succeed, no matter what, and that teachers can have a huge impact on a child's life.

  • You are comfortable receiving direct feedback and coaching - being "new" to a set of skills excites you.

IPS seeks individuals of all ethnic and racial backgrounds to apply for this position. We believe that educator diversity is critically important and are striving to recruit a team that reflects the communities where our schools are located.

Who We Are

Our model is grounded in social emotional learning, personalized instruction, project based learning, and a culture of positivity. We prepare a diverse student body to succeed in college and impact communities as the next generation of equity-driven leaders. Students at Impact's flagship school performed in the top 2% in ELA and Math, statewide, as compared to other schools serving 60% or more low income children.

Essential Functions of a Teaching Fellow

Teaching Fellows teach alongside an experienced Lead Teacher in Impact's early elementary grades (Transitional Kindergarten - 2nd grade).

Support Lead Teacher in Implementing High Quality Classroom Instruction

Teaching Fellows work alongside an experienced Lead Teacher. Teaching Fellows lead instruction throughout the day, sometimes alongside a Lead Teacher and sometimes independently. Teaching Fellows provide coverage when Lead Teachers are absent, which is also an opportunity to grow their own teaching skill.

Serve as a Mentor to Students

Teaching Fellows are assigned a "mentor group" of students. Teaching Fellows support mentees in setting goals and serve as a primary point of contact with families of their mentor group. Teaching Fellows deliver Impact's social emotional learning curriculum.

Lead Enrichment Courses

Teaching Fellows lead enrichment courses. These are similar to electives in the early elementary setting.

Commit to Professional Learning and Growth

Teaching Fellows attend professional development and receive regular coaching. Teaching Fellows are excited to be pushed in their practice and grow as teachers.

Additional Duties

Teaching Fellows support arrival/dismissal daily. Teaching Fellows provide substitute coverage. Teaching Fellows supervise one email (snack or lunch) and one recess a day.

Additional Requirements

  • Prior to the start date of employment all employees need to obtain clearance on a criminal justice fingerprint and background check.

  • Prior to being made an offer, the hiring manager will ask candidates to complete a character and fitness form from the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction."

  • An offer is contingent upon verification that the person is authorized to work in the United States for any employer
