The Foundational Sciences in the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) at East Carolina University are seeking Teaching Assistant/Associate Professors in the following departments to support medical and graduate education: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Anatomy and Cell Biology; Pharmacology & Toxicology; Microbiology and Immunology; Physiology.

These are non-tenure track, fixed-term appointments with three-to-five-year renewable contracts. The educational focus of the Foundational Sciences in BSOM includes significant contributions to teaching and administration in the BSOM M.D. program; the D.M.D. program in the School of Dental Medicine; and graduate-level courses in the Biomedical Sciences M.S. and Ph.D. programs in BSOM.

Job Duties

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver live and recorded lectures to support teaching in the M.D., M.S., and Ph.D. programs;

  • Assist in the administration of flipped classrooms and review sessions in the M.D. program;

  • Provide individualized support to students through office hours;

  • Contribute to writing USMLE-style clinical vignette problems to maintain practice and assessment question banks in the M.D. program;

  • Provide content tutoring and study process support to students in partnership with the BSOM Office of Student Success and Wellness;

  • Assist in the administration and secure review of assessments in the M.D. program;

  • Contribute to teaching and administration of other pathway programs including the Summer Program for Future Doctors (SPFD), which provides a condensed preview of the M.D. curriculum to assist in the preparation of students for medical school;

  • Contribute to foundational science teaching activities in the D.M.D. program in the ECU School of Dental Medicine and in health professional programs in the College of Allied Health and School of Nursing;

  • Candidates with an appropriate background in Anatomy and Cell Biology may contribute to the gross anatomy cadaveric teaching activities that are an integral part of the M.D. and other health professional programs;

  • Contribute to ongoing curriculum development in the various professional degree programs;

  • Develop and contribute to opportunities for scholarship in learning and education.

Contingent upon the availability of funds

Minimum Education/Experience

Candidates will have a doctorate (Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M.) in a relevant foundational science field and experience with teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level. The level of appointment will be determined by the candidate's experience level. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

The successful candidates will have broad content expertise in one or more of the basic biomedical sciences disciplines noted above.
