Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor of Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology

The College of Applied Humans Sciences at West Virginia University is seeking applicants for a faculty position in the School of Sport Sciences. This position is a Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor for the Morgantown campus to begin August 2024.

The School of Sport Sciences (SoSS) serves approximately 1,000 students across 13-degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels in sport, exercise, and performance psychology, sport management, sport leadership, coaching and performance science, and physical education and kinesiology. The PhD program in sport, exercise, and performance psychology offers a dual degree option paired with the master's program in clinical mental health counseling.

The SoSS mission focuses on conducting and disseminating high quality research, preparing students to be leaders and innovators in their fields, and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of the state and beyond through outreach efforts. We are looking for highly qualified individuals who can contribute to this mission.

Appointment

August 16, 2024. Faculty hired at the Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor level will be in a position that is promotable and will have an annual nine-month appointment. Summer teaching opportunities are available.

Responsibilities

Candidate will be expected to:

  • Lead on campus and online graduate programming in sport, exercise, and performance psychology.

  • Effectively teach online and in-person courses in the sport, exercise, and performance psychology bachelor's, master's, and/or doctoral programs.

  • Supervise graduate-level applied sport and performance psychology internships toward the CMPC credential.

  • Provide service to the sport, exercise, and performance psychology program that supports student recruitment, retention, and success.

Required qualifications include an earned doctoral degree in sport, exercise, and performance psychology or a closely related area such as kinesiology or clinical/counseling psychology. Applicants must have certification as a mental performance consultant (CMPC) and be in good standing as an approved mentor with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Applicants must additionally demonstrate the ability to teach at the college level (including in-person and online modalities); this evidence can include training or certificates in higher education teaching and/or experience teaching in higher education. Applicants must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in several of the following areas: sport and performance psychology (introductory and advanced), social and psychological foundations of performance, psychological sport performance enhancement, counseling college student-athletes, ethics, psychology of injury, mindfulness for health and well-being, and related areas. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to coordinate, manage, and lead. The above qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications include at least 3 years of experience in applied mental performance consulting and successful provision of supervision.

Consideration of an appointment at the rank of Teaching Associate Professor, at minimum, requires five years of higher education and/or industry experience.
