There are currently 4 open Teaching Assistant positions in the American Ethnic Studies program. These positions are available for the full academic year of 2024-25

Graduate TA duties and responsibilities may include the following (specific duties and responsibilities will be provided by course instructor):

  • Attend lectures

  • Conduct quiz section meetings

  • Facilitate discussions

  • Prepare review materials for quiz sections

  • Hold extra review sessions for exams

  • Hold regular office hours

  • Tutor students

  • Help run technology during class

  • Develop and maintain electronic bulletin boards, discussion sites, etc.

  • Grade assignments

  • Proctor exams

  • Score exams

  • Maintain grading records

  • Maintain course attendance records

  • Be present during finals' week to meet and calculate quarter grades

  • Attend instructor/TA meetings

  • Act as liaison/mediator between student and professor

  • Prepare lecture materials

  • Present lectures

  • Prepare overheads

  • Prepare handout materials

  • Review literature

  • Place course materials on library reserve

Please have three letters of recommendation sent to aes@uw.edu ATTN: TA Selection Committee as well as attach a separate sheet detailing teaching experience and philosophy (especially knowledge and experience dealing with topics in ethnic studies and/or cultural diversity). A resume can provide some of this information; however, we recommend that you also describe specifically the skills and abilities you acquired in each position.

Attach a brief statement (about 1 page) of educational and professional objectives. You may use the goal statement required for your application to the graduate program; you may also choose to incorporate goals you wish to achieve through an assistantship.

Returning TAs, request letters of reference from three instructors, professors, or professional supervisors familiar with your academic and professional qualifications. References from AES faculty are particularly helpful. Ask them to write independently to the Department of American Ethnic Studies, at the previously stated address.

Must be enrolled in UW social science or humanities with knowledge and experience in Ethnic Studies or cultural diversity pursuing a PhD with knowledge in African American Studies, Asian American Studies and Chicano Studies. Priority will be given to graduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Students employed in a salaried assistantship position (at any FTE percentage) are required to enroll in a minimum of ten credits in autumn, winter, and spring quarters and in a minimum of two credits during summer quarter.
