Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Theatre in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, invites applications for a non-tenure track 100% appointed Teaching Assistant Professor and Director of Production/Technical Director in Theatre to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

The non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor will teach one course per semester, typically an introductory Stagecraft Course covering Scenery, Painting, and Lighting or a course in their area of expertise and will supervise all production operations for The Department of Theatre including the supporting production labs and drills. Working with the Production Stage Manager, they will schedule the typically Five to Seven production season, and project and determine production needs in conjunction with other Design and Technology faculty and department administration. The position is responsible for producing working drawings as needed to support scenery construction. Supporting this position in production roles are a Lead Carpenter (Instructor), Paints and Properties Supervisor (Instructor), Lighting and Sound Supervisor (Instructor or Staff), and a Costume Supervisor (Instructor). Additional support for production is provided by up to Six MFA Candidates serving as Graduate Assistants, student workers, and students in production for specific courses.

We seek a candidate who demonstrates curiosity in emerging technologies and novel approaches to traditional methods and must be current on innovative and contemporary trends in their discipline to enhance their teaching and service roles for the University. Service to the university, region, and national organizations is expected. In addition, a commitment to collaboration and collegiality is essential for the position.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

The Department of Theatre provides a professional training program dedicated to carefully nurturing a select group of theatre artists. Expert faculty members mentor students in classes as well as in one-to-one settings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate:

  • Terminal degree in Theatre or related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment.

  • Prior experience as a Technical Director

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with, leading, training, and otherwise developing and cultivating theatre makers/fabricators
