A. Position Definition &
Under direction provides instruction on the middle and/or secondary level to students; does related work as required.
B. Position Expectations and Essential Functions:
Plans subject matter to be taught.
Devises courses of study in accordance with individual abilities.
Prepares study program in accordance with a standard middle or high school curriculum.
Prepares periodic examinations or programs designed to measure participants scholastic knowledge and reading ability.
Gives remedial reading and/or other instruction to participants to determine their scholastic standing and assigns them to appropriate classes.
Stimulates participants interest in the study program.
Provides counsel and advice to participants on problems related to education and vocational goals.
Participates in group treatment meetings related to student treatment plans.
Conducts visual and audio surveillance of activities to ensure custody and security of students and facility.
Follows through on educational components of treatment plans.
Serves on various committees as needed and requested.
Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with other staff, students, and visitors.
Keeps needed reports, records and files.
Appointees must possess a teacher's certificate or eligibility for certification as a teacher in the state where the work site is located.Other
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in state where the work site is located only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
D. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of middle and/or secondary education.
Knowledge of the educational problems of high school dropouts.
Knowledge of the techniques used in group activities.
Knowledge of the preparation and maintenance of accurate records.
Ability to analyze, comprehend, and interpret problems pertinent to the work involved.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
Ability to operate, inspect, and maintain equipment used in instruction activities.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates.
Ability to observe and report conditions of participants.
Ability to work with a variety of type of people and to establish and maintain suitable records and files.
Ability to tolerate verbal and mental abuse while maintaining a professional demeanor.
Ability to perform appropriate crisis intervention involving student behavior, including physically breaking up fights in the classroom.
Ability to complete pre-service and annual in-service CPR and first aid certification training and self-defense and physical intervention training.
Ability to pass drug and TB screening and testing and criminal background check.
Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines; set priorities; deal diplomatically with difficult individuals; and supervise others; ability to manage multiple programs; lead management teams and work independently. Adherence to the highest ethical standards essential.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
