Purpose of the Position:

The Substitute Pre-K Teacher will provide classroom instruction, supervising the teacher assistant and maintaining the safety of all students. This is a temporary position to cover the duration of the permanent teacher's parental leave.

  • This is a Temporary Full-time Exempt position. This approximate duration of this position will be two months (dates to be established upon hire).

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Maintain an appropriate Pre-K Classroom environment with designated learning centers.
  • The social environment of the classroom should work in tandem with the physical environment to create a positive and supportive learning community.
  • Lead and auxiliary teacher share instructional responsibilities, child supervision, and other classroom duties.
  • Lead and Auxiliary teachers must interact with the children during learning/free choice time and gross motor time to facilitate children's play.
  • Lead and Auxiliary teachers work together on Teaching Strategies Gold observations and documentation.
  • Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times, being alert for the needs and/or problems of the children as individuals and as a group.
  • Assist with research projects as indicated by the director.
  • Plan motivating classroom activities following the approved curriculum and developmentally appropriate practice.
  • Be familiar with and follow all UAH and Early Learning Center/Rise School Policies and OSR Guidelines.
  • Be familiar with and follow DHR, NAEYC and State Grant program requirements.
  • Handle behavior promptly and in accordance with stated school policy on behavior management. Notify Director of any behavioral problems immediately. Utilize theories of Conscious Discipline throughout the school day. Support Co-Workers with this program as needed.
  • Document each child's performance and progress with daily data records and yearly updated assessments, or earlier if necessary.
  • Adhere to all safety and sanitation requirements set for the in the Minimum Standard Rules for Licensed Child-Care Centers; ensure that children are supervised and dressed appropriately.
  • Interact frequently with children; encourage the use of language and independent functioning using positive reinforcement.
  • Write daily lesson plans that coordinate with the adopted curriculum and is following developmentally appropriate practice, include state standards and/or Teaching Strategies Gold objectives. Prepare weekly newsletters, daily data tracking records, assessment reports, OSR reports and other reports as required.
  • Understand and implement USDA guidelines for CACFP reimbursement, incorporate family style at school meals.
  • Treat parents with respect; direct parent concerns to director and lead teacher; make parents feel welcome.
  • Treat colleagues with respect; willingly communicate with team members, display a positive attitude; maintain confidentiality; keep director and lead teacher informed of special needs or problems of children or parents.
  • The lead teacher will resolve parent concerns, maintain a healthy and safe learning environment, and make recommendations for students' learning program.
  • The incumbent will also need to resolve behavioral or disciplinary problems daily within the classroom environment using Conscious Discipline techniques.
  • Perform routine duties and responsibilities on time; take initiative in recognizing what needs to be done and do it.
  • Daily duties include diaper changing (every two hours and as needed when a child is wet or soiled, sterilizing/cleaning toys and equipment, assisting with children's snacks/lunches/feeding, vacuuming/sweeping, mopping, laundry, washing dishes/utensils, and other general cleaning duties.
  • Maintain good attendance; be on time for work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Attend and assist with after school special events and fundraisers for the UAH Early Learning Center.
  • Assist with educational assessments of children as part of the assessment team, if needed for a student.
  • Collaborate with the therapy team, if appropriate, on development and implementation of IEPs. Make special education referrals as appropriate.
  • Facilitate integration of children with and without disabilities in the classroom.
  • Assist with children's transition to the next classroom or educational setting.
  • Utilize technology and adaptive equipment as appropriate.
  • Attend regular staff planning and evaluation meetings.
  • Maintain communication with families via telephone calls, email, daily notes, newsletters, and hold 2 conferences each school year.
  • Conduct parent conferences at designated times throughout the year (quarterly) and upon request of parents/director.
  • Attend conferences/workshops as required.
  • Keep director informed in advance of program needs and parent concerns.
  • Report to director any special needs or problems of individual children.
  • Assist with training of college and high school interns/volunteers.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, Collaborative Education, Child Development or a related field
  • 1 year of full-time verifiable experience working with young children in a classroom setting
  • Ability to meet DHR License-Exempt hiring requirements

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with specialization in Early Childhood Education is preferred
  • Coursework in the assessment of young children, developmentally appropriate practices with young children, Behavior management, and data collection is desired
  • Knowledge of Conscious Discipline is preferred
  • Knowledge of NAEYC standards is desired
  • Teaching Strategies Gold experience (online portfolio) is preferred
  • Infant/Child CPR certification is desired
