BASIC FUNCTION:

Performs a variety of functions within the school environment to facilitate the learning process of handicapped students. The Resource Specialist maintains a caseload average of 24 individual students and coordinates their individual education programs to facilitate their success in the special education classes and regular classrooms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Aesses students who are referred through the special educational referral process by measuring their education and social development and interprets the results to other specialists and parents.

Participates in a multi-disciplinary team to determine the needs and specific goals and objectives of student's individual educational plans.

Provides remediation of specific disabilities through direct instruction.

Provides assistance to students to facilitate their success in regular program instruction.

Modifies the student=s individual educational program by continuous evaluation.

Consults and serves as a resource person with other staff members regarding the needs of handicapped students.

Articulates with school personnel and parents regarding the understanding of a student's behavior and learning needs for implementation of methods to facilitate change.

Confers with appropriate resources and professionals with the special education program.

Enhances professional standards by participating in seminars, workshops and classes in special education.

Continues independent professional growth through the use of journals and other resources.

Maintains files of special education students.

Maintains reports as required by federal, state and DISTRICT regulations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor of Arts Degree and three (3) years full-time teaching or experience including two (2) years of teaching Special Education. Master=s Degree or advanced training in special education is recommended.

ABILITIES:

Develop needs assessment and individual learning plans for students enrolled in program.

Read and analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.

Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.

Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Apply current research and theory to program.

Plan and implement lessons based on DISTRICT and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students, peers and parents.

Speak clearly and concisely in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: continued

The employee must occasionally move up to 100 pounds with a wheelchair, and move or lift up to 50 pounds. With appropriate training, the employee must be able to restrain a student of up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.

CREDENTIALS, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:

A valid California specialist credential with a resource certificate or a mild/moderate or moderate/severe credential.

A valid California driver's license.
