Job Title: Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Term of Employment: 10 months

POSITION SUMMARY: The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible for providing children with a safe and healthy learning environment; advancing their physical and intellectual growth; supporting social and emotional development; providing positive guidance and discipline; establishing positive relationships with families and encouraging their involvement in the education of their children; ensuring a well-run purposeful program responsive to participant's needs; and maintaining a commitment to professionalism. It is the responsibility of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to provide training and assistance to the school staff about the needs of the students in the classroom and school setting. Positions may be in settings with students using listening and spoken language or manual communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Use professional knowledge to address the needs of the deaf/hard of hearing individual, demonstrate respect for individual differences, cultures, and learning needs.

  • Assess the educational needs of learners who are deaf or hard of hearing and gather data to determine learner needs, measure progress, guide instruction and intervention, provide timely feedback to learners, families, and staff.

  • Communicate and collaborate with learners, families, and staff regarding student's hearing loss. Which may involve classroom observations, teacher training on implications of hearing loss in the classroom setting, parent training on implications of hearing loss and impact for the learner, providing teachers with feedback regarding best practices for students with hearing loss, assessment of curriculum needs and teaching strategies, assisting teachers in supporting the personal and social development of learners with hearing loss in the classroom.

  • Oversee the use of technical and other specialized equipment for learners with hearing loss; includes monitoring and troubleshooting amplification equipment.

  • Oversee communication needs and language development in signed and/or spoken language as appropriate

  • Develop and maintain appropriately written Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students and ensure the implementation of the IEP.

  • Work with students in both district placed programs and itinerant settings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Current Teacher Certification in the state of North Carolina

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education/Deaf Hard of Hearing

  • Sign Language proficiency preferred.
