Job Title: Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Category: Regional Services

JOB CHARACTERISTICS:
It is the responsibility of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to assist the Classroom Teachers, Principals, Interpreters, Instructional Assistants, etc . to understand and meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assesses communication, language, academic, and social/emotional development of deaf and hard of hearing children.
Communicates with each deaf or hard of hearing child at his/her language level in his/her mode, providing appropriate educational counseling as needed.
Designs and plans educational programs in cooperation with classroom teacher, other personnel, and parents which are based upon interpretation of diagnostic data including audiological assessments and classroom performance and that will be appropriate to the individual student's needs and abilities.
Develops and maintains schedule for serving assigned students.
Implements, monitors and modifies educational programs to meet the deaf or hard of hearing student's changing needs as written in the IEP, including communicative, behavioral, vocational, instructional and social.
Provides a continuum of services including consultation, direct instruction, or referral to other agencies as needed.
Utilizes media/materials and support personnel appropriately to supplement educational programs.
Develops and maintains evaluation records on student progress.
Orients and educates the school staff and administration relative to the unique needs and learning styles of deaf and hard of hearing students.
Plans, organizes, and conducts appropriate conferences with district staff, regional staff, interpreters and parents to carry out program objectives.
Provides parents, teachers and the community with materials and information as needed.
Maintains student records as required by district, Regional Program, state and federal agencies.
Completes required paperwork in specified time and manner.
Follows ESD procedures for assessment, placement, instruction, record keeping, and dismissal.
Works harmoniously with other employees and deals tactfully with the public.
Maintains confidentiality including of student records and of ESD staff and complies with state and federal regulations regarding privacy.
Maintains regular attendance in order to preserve the continuity of service delivery for the program.
Meets standards for competent and ethical performance as outlined in OAR 584-020-0035.
Performs duties in a manner reasonably expected and generally recognized by the profession.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Program Administrator and Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Teaching experience or practicum experience with normal hearing children.
2.Teaching experience or practicum experience with hearing impaired children.
4.Must hold a valid Oregon driver's license and provide own transportation.
5.Demonstrates ability to communicate with staff, students, and the public in an effective manner
and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
6.Demonstrates respect for confidential information
7.Holds a current first aid card and CPR card .

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

1.Oregon certification as a Teacher of the Deaf.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee may work in regular or special education settings and /or in community settings with students in small or large groups or 1-to-1 and may be required to travel on the job .

The employee may work beyond an eight-hour day or a five - day work week attending meetings, conferences, and school activities. The employee needs to be competent in conflict resolution.

The employee must be able to communicate effectively in confrontational and emotional situations involving staff, students, parents and patrons. Confidentiality is a top priority for the persons in this position.

The employee at times works under varied workloads and inflexible deadlines. Problems may arise which require immediate attention setting up conflicting priorities. Sound judgment is required to effectively prioritize these demands.

Supervision and instructional responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand up to 30 consecutive minutes and to move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student's safety is being jeopardized.

The employee must be able to lift materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.

The employee may need to participate with others in lifting /moving equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

The employee needs to be able to participate with one other employee in lifting students weighing up to 120 pounds, if the student's protocol permits. All lifting and transferring of students should be done in accordance with approved protocols

The employee may come into contact with biohazards such as human waste, saliva, and blood, and should take appropriate protective precautions.

Rate: $47,371 - $87,518
Location: Coos and Curry Counties
A fingerprint-based criminal history investigation will be required.
