CONTEXT AND MISSION: The Bainbridge Island School District serves approximately 3,500 students. In 2020, parents, students, community members, and staff at all levels of the district developed a district improvement plan that reflects our goals for each student.

Job Summary: The Highly Capable Teacher on Special Assignment (HC TOSA) assists with planning and supporting the implementation of the district's highly capable program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist classroom teachers in design and use of instructional strategies for use with highly capable children

  • Assist classroom teachers in assessment strategies and record keeping for highly capable students

  • Work directly with highly capable students by providing instruction and assessment based upon individual need

  • Serve as resource to building principals in helping them to meet the needs of highly capable students in their buildings.

  • Communicate with all staff, parents and the community on matters relating to the highly capable program

  • Attend Highly Capable Committee meetings

  • Build effective relationships with students and colleagues

  • Design and implement training for teachers on highly capable instruction and practices

  • Advise and assist district administration in implementation of the district's highly capable program

Other Job Functions

  • Perform other job related duties as assigned

Essential Job Requirements/Qualifications:

Experience Preferred:

  • Five or more years of teaching or equivalent experience in grades K-6. Broad experience with instruction for students identified as highly capable/gifted.

  • Experience supporting teachers in the classroom.

  • Training and planning at the building and/or district level.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

  • Clear written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with administrators, teachers, and students. Demonstrated ability to conduct language arts professional development activities. Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings. Demonstrated ability to identify innovative solutions to problems. Ability to develop long-range plans.

  • Knowledge and understanding of definitions, theories and identification processes of highly capable students.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the learning differences, developmental milestones and cognitive/affective characteristics of highly capable students including those from diverse backgrounds and identify their related academic and social-emotional needs

  • Knowledge and understanding of evidence-based strategies to assess highly capable students, and to differentiate instruction, content and assignments for them

Licenses & Certifications: A valid Washington State Teaching Certificate grades K - 6.
