Job Summary

The Professional Learning Teacher Expert collaborates with principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, and academic services leaders districtwide to support the professional learning of elementary staff in alignment with the Anchorage School District's mission, goals, and guardrails. The teacher expert supports elementary professional learning within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) and is jointly supervised by administrators in the Teaching and Learning and Mental Health & Student Supports departments. The position has a flexible calendar to start or end work up to three weeks before or after the school year.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent on student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), and positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements

The following are required:

  • A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in K-6 education.

The following are preferred:

  • Experience with professional development (e.g., coaching, mentoring, leading professional learning communities/PLCs, facilitating training, etc.).

  • Evidence of strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Evidence of strong pedagogical knowledge.

  • Proficiency in time planning and management.

  • Flexible with strong organizational skills.

  • Experience implementing a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) that integrates reading, math, social, emotional, and behavioral core instruction and intervention, assessment systems, and data-based decision making.

  • Demonstrated technology skills that support professional learning (e.g., knowledge of Canvas or other learning management systems).

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides districtwide professional learning support for elementary staff.

  • Supports the elementary professional learning plan designed to build educator capacity within a multi-tiered system of support and advance the growth and achievement of all students.

  • Provides ongoing professional development for adult learners including but not limited to developing and facilitating training, supporting collaborative team structures, and consulting and coaching on research-based instructional and behavioral strategies and district-adopted curriculum.

  • Applies understanding of multiple measures to facilitate collaborative data-driven discussions and decision-making.

  • Develops and maintains knowledge about evidence-based practices in the areas of reading, math, and positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS).

  • Applies current research and emerging trends in professional learning.

  • Uses current technology to support and enhance professional development.

  • Uses organizational skills to effectively manage time and complete various professional learning tasks and projects.

  • Travels to various school sites within the district to support professional learning.

Physical /Mental Demands

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities, and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
