Position Summary:

The Dropout Prevention Coordinator manages and implements the district's dropout prevention initiatives in conjunction with providing support services in areas such as: Peer Leadership, Conflict Resolution, Peer Mediation and Parent Involvement. The Dropout Prevention Specialist also assists schools in developing dropout prevention strategies and programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors student attendance.

  • Acts as a liaison between dropout and potential dropout students, their homes and the school.

  • Solicits parent volunteers and coordinates notification of absences to parents via phone recordings, letters and parent volunteer phone calls.

  • Locates and counsels students who are excessively absent from or have dropped out of class(es).

  • Identifies students needing chronic illness exemptions and coordinates that process.

  • Makes determinations regarding "extenuating circumstances" for students exceeding attendance limits and coordinates that process.

  • Assists with emergency issues regarding attendance.

  • Handles attendance related discipline including referrals and consequences.

  • Assists with monitoring student behavior during the day.

  • Identifies students needing additional academic assistance.

  • Confers with parents and/or teachers regarding the student's academic status and explores the potential for improving the present situation through additional student involvement under contract.

  • Meets with students daily to discuss attendance and academic progress and refers students to the appropriate people for specific issues such as schedule changes, etc.

  • Meets with administrative team to communicate student information and solicit input to help students. ? Coordinates the development of academic plans in cooperation with guidance counselors to ensure student success with academic/attendance performance.

  • Works with other teachers, parents, students and counselors to assist students recover credits or find alternative education placement to meet graduation requirements.

  • Works with the Special Education Department and school Psychologist on attendance issues unique to their department.

  • Works with outside agencies to service students in need including but not limited to CPS, law enforcement, Tempe social service agencies and outside counseling agencies.

  • Ensures that all work is completed in accordance with District policy and applicable state and federal laws.

  • Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Training and Experience:

  • Previous experience in a similiar position preferred.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

  • Valid Arizona Teaching certification i

  • Valid DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card.
